A Question About the Third Absorption
“‘တတိယံ ဈာနံ, တတိယံ ဈာနန်'တိ ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကတမံ နု ခေါ တတိယံ ဈာနန္တိ? တဿ မယှံ, အာဝုသော, ဧတဒဟောသိ—ဣဓ ဘိက္ခု ပီတိယာ စ ဝိရာဂါ ဥပေက္ခကော စ ဝိဟရတိ သတော စ သမ္ပဇာနော သုခဉ္စ ကာယေန ပဋိသံဝေဒေတိ, ယံ တံ အရိယာ အာစိက္ခန္တိ: ‘ဥပေက္ခကော သတိမာ သုခဝိဟာရီ'တိ တတိယံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ တတိယံ ဈာနန္တိ၊
“They speak of this thing called the ‘third jhāna’. What is the third jhāna? It occurred to me: ‘With the fading away of (mental) joy, a bhikkhu enters and remains in the third jhāna, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally feeling deeply the (bodily) pleasure of which the noble ones declare, “Equanimous and mindful, a pleasure is to meditate.” This is called the third jhāna.’
သော ခွါဟံ, အာဝုသော, ပီတိယာ စ ဝိရာဂါ ဥပေက္ခကော စ ဝိဟရာမိ သတော စ သမ္ပဇာနော သုခဉ္စ ကာယေန ပဋိသံဝေဒေမိ၊ ယံ တံ အရိယာ အာစိက္ခန္တိ: ‘ဥပေက္ခကော သတိမာ သုခဝိဟာရီ'တိ တတိယံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရာမိ၊ တဿ မယှံ, အာဝုသော, ဣမိနာ ဝိဟာရေန ဝိဟရတော ပီတိသဟဂတာ သညာမနသိကာရာ သမုဒါစရန္တိ၊
And so … I was entering and remaining in the third jhāna. While I was in that meditation, perceptions accompanied by (mental) joy beset me due to loss of focus.
အထ ခေါ မံ, အာဝုသော, ဘဂဝါ ဣဒ္ဓိယာ ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဧတဒဝေါစ: ‘မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန, မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန၊ မာ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, တတိယံ ဈာနံ ပမာဒေါ, တတိယေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ သဏ္ဌပေဟိ, တတိယေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ ဧကောဒိံ ကရောဟိ, တတိယေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ သမာဒဟာ'တိ၊
Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said, ‘Moggallāna, Moggallāna! Don’t neglect the third jhāna, brahmin! Settle your mind in the third jhāna; unify your mind and immerse it in the third jhāna.’
သော ခွါဟံ, အာဝုသော, အပရေန သမယေန ပီတိယာ စ ဝိရာဂါ ဥပေက္ခကော စ ဝိဟရာမိ သတော စ သမ္ပဇာနော သုခဉ္စ ကာယေန ပဋိသံဝေဒေမိ, ယံ တံ အရိယာ အာစိက္ခန္တိ: ‘ဥပေက္ခကော သတိမာ သုခဝိဟာရီ'တိ တတိယံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟာသိံ၊ ယဉှိ တံ အာဝုသော သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ …ပေ… မဟာဘိညတံ ပတ္တော”တိ၊
And so, after some time … I entered and remained in the third jhāna. So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, it’s me.”
