A Question About the Fourth Absorption
“‘စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ, စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနန်'တိ ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကတမံ နု ခေါ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနန္တိ? တဿ မယှံ, အာဝုသော, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘ဣဓ ဘိက္ခု သုခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ဒုက္ခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သောမနဿဒေါမနဿာနံ အတ္ထင်္ဂမာ အဒုက္ခမသုခံ ဥပေက္ခာသတိပါရိသုဒ္ဓိံ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနန်'တိ၊
“They speak of this thing called the ‘fourth jhāna’. What is the fourth jhāna? It occurred to me: ‘It’s when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, a bhikkhu enters and remains in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called the fourth jhāna.’
သော ခွါဟံ, အာဝုသော, သုခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ဒုက္ခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သောမနဿဒေါမနဿာနံ အတ္ထင်္ဂမာ အဒုက္ခမသုခံ ဥပေက္ခာသတိပါရိသုဒ္ဓိံ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရာမိ၊ တဿ မယှံ, အာဝုသော, ဣမိနာ ဝိဟာရေန ဝိဟရတော သုခသဟဂတာ သညာမနသိကာရာ သမုဒါစရန္တိ၊
And so … I was entering and remaining in the fourth jhāna. While I was in that meditation, perceptions accompanied by pleasure beset me due to loss of focus.
အထ ခေါ မံ, အာဝုသော, ဘဂဝါ ဣဒ္ဓိယာ ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဧတဒဝေါစ: ‘မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန, မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန၊ မာ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ပမာဒေါ, စတုတ္ထေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ သဏ္ဌပေဟိ, စတုတ္ထေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ ဧကောဒိံ ကရောဟိ, စတုတ္ထေ ဈာနေ စိတ္တံ သမာဒဟာ'တိ၊
Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said, ‘Moggallāna, Moggallāna! Don’t neglect the fourth jhāna, brahmin! Settle your mind in the fourth jhāna; unify your mind and immerse it in the fourth jhāna.’
သော ခွါဟံ, အာဝုသော, အပရေန သမယေန သုခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ဒုက္ခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သောမနဿဒေါမနဿာနံ အတ္ထင်္ဂမာ အဒုက္ခမသုခံ ဥပေက္ခာသတိပါရိသုဒ္ဓိံ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟာသိံ၊
And so, after some time … I entered and remained in the fourth jhāna.
ယဉှိ တံ, အာဝုသော, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ …ပေ… မဟာဘိညတံ ပတ္တော”တိ၊
So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, it’s me.”
