With Suvīra

ឯវំ មេ សុតំ—ឯកំ សមយំ ភគវា សាវត្ថិយំ វិហរតិ ជេតវនេ អនាថបិណ្ឌិកស្ស អារាមេ។ តត្រ ខោ ភគវា ភិក្ខូ អាមន្តេសិ: “ភិក្ខវោ”តិ។

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

“ភទន្តេ”តិ តេ ភិក្ខូ ភគវតោ បច្ចស្សោសុំ។ ភគវា ឯតទវោច:

“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

“ភូតបុព្ពំ, ភិក្ខវេ, អសុរា ទេវេ អភិយំសុ។

“Once upon a time, bhikkhus, the demons marched against the gods.

អថ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សក្កោ ទេវានមិន្ទោ សុវីរំ ទេវបុត្តំ អាមន្តេសិ: ‘ឯតេ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរា ទេវេ អភិយន្តិ។ គច្ឆ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរេ បច្ចុយ្យាហីៜតិ។

Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the god Suvīra, ‘Dear Suvīra, the demons march against the gods! Go, and march against the demons!’

‘ឯវំ, ភទ្ទន្តវាៜតិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សុវីរោ ទេវបុត្តោ សក្កស្ស ទេវានមិន្ទស្ស បដិស្សុត្វា បមាទំ អាបាទេសិ។

‘Yes, lord,’ replied Suvīra. But he fell into negligence.

ទុតិយម្បិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សក្កោ ទេវានមិន្ទោ សុវីរំ ទេវបុត្តំ អាមន្តេសិ: ‘ឯតេ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរា ទេវេ អភិយន្តិ។ គច្ឆ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរេ បច្ចុយ្យាហីៜតិ។

For a second time Sakka addressed Suvīra, ‘Dear Suvīra, the demons march against the gods! Go, and march against the demons!’

‘ឯវំ, ភទ្ទន្តវាៜតិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សុវីរោ ទេវបុត្តោ សក្កស្ស ទេវានមិន្ទស្ស បដិស្សុត្វា ទុតិយម្បិ បមាទំ អាបាទេសិ។

‘Yes, lord,’ replied Suvīra. But for a second time he fell into negligence.

តតិយម្បិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សក្កោ ទេវានមិន្ទោ សុវីរំ ទេវបុត្តំ អាមន្តេសិ: ‘ឯតេ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរា ទេវេ អភិយន្តិ។ គច្ឆ, តាត សុវីរ, អសុរេ បច្ចុយ្យាហីៜតិ។

For a third time Sakka addressed Suvīra, ‘Dear Suvīra, the demons march against the gods! Go, and march against the demons!’

‘ឯវំ, ភទ្ទន្តវាៜតិ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សុវីរោ ទេវបុត្តោ សក្កស្ស ទេវានមិន្ទស្ស បដិស្សុត្វា តតិយម្បិ បមាទំ អាបាទេសិ។

‘Yes, lord,’ replied Suvīra. But for a third time he fell into negligence.

អថ ខោ, ភិក្ខវេ, សក្កោ ទេវានមិន្ទោ សុវីរំ ទេវបុត្តំ គាថាយ អជ្ឈភាសិ:

Then Sakka addressed the god Suvīra in verse:

‘អនុដ្ឋហំ អវាយាមំ, សុខំ យត្រាធិគច្ឆតិ; សុវីរ តត្ថ គច្ឆាហិ, មញ្ច តត្ថេវ បាបយាៜតិ។

‘Suvīra, go to that place where you can achieve happiness without working for it or trying hard—and take me with you!’

‘អលស្វស្ស អនុដ្ឋាតា, ន ច កិច្ចានិ ការយេ; សព្ពកាមសមិទ្ធស្ស, តំ មេ សក្ក វរំ ទិសាៜតិ។

‘That a lazy man who does no work, and doesn’t do his duty, should fulfill all his desires: Sakka, grant me this boon!’

‘យត្ថាលសោ អនុដ្ឋាតា, អច្ចន្តំ សុខមេធតិ; សុវីរ តត្ថ គច្ឆាហិ, មញ្ច តត្ថេវ បាបយាៜតិ។

‘Suvīra, go to that place where a lazy man who does no work prospers in unending happiness—and take me with you!’

‘អកម្មុនា ទេវសេដ្ឋ, សក្ក វិន្ទេមុ យំ សុខំ; អសោកំ អនុបាយាសំ, តំ មេ សក្ក វរំ ទិសាៜតិ។

‘O Sakka, first among gods, that we might find the happiness that’s sorrowless, unstressed: Sakka, grant me this boon!’

‘សចេ អត្ថិ អកម្មេន, កោចិ ក្វចិ ន ជីវតិ; និព្ពានស្ស ហិ សោ មគ្គោ, សុវីរ តត្ថ គច្ឆាហិ; មញ្ច តត្ថេវ បាបយាៜតិ។

‘If there exists anywhere a place where one can live happily without working, that surely would be Nibbana’s path! Go there, Suvīra, and take me with you!’

សោ ហិ នាម, ភិក្ខវេ, សក្កោ ទេវានមិន្ទោ សកំ បុញ្ញផលំ ឧបជីវមានោ ទេវានំ តាវតិំសានំ ឥស្សរិយាធិបច្ចំ រជ្ឹ ការេន្តោ ឧដ្ឋានវីរិយស្ស វណ្ណវាទី ភវិស្សតិ។ ឥធ ខោ តំ, ភិក្ខវេ, សោភេថ, យំ តុម្ហេ ឯវំ ស្វាក្ខាតេ ធម្មវិនយេ បព្ពជិតា សមានា ឧដ្ឋហេយ្យាថ ឃដេយ្យាថ វាយមេយ្យាថ អប្បត្តស្ស បត្តិយា អនធិគតស្ស អធិគមាយ, អសច្ឆិកតស្ស សច្ឆិកិរិយាយា”តិ។

So, bhikkhus, even Sakka, lord of gods—while living off of the fruit of his good and bad deeds, and ruling as sovereign lord over these gods of the Thirty-Three—will speak in praise of initiative and energy. But since you have gone forth in such a well explained teaching and training, it would be truly beautiful for you to try hard, strive, and make an effort to attain the unattained, achieve the unachieved, and realize the unrealized!”
