A Question About the Signless
“‘អនិមិត្តោ ចេតោសមាធិ, អនិមិត្តោ ចេតោសមាធីៜតិ វុច្ចតិ។ កតមោ នុ ខោ អនិមិត្តោ ចេតោសមាធីតិ? តស្ស មយ្ហំ, អាវុសោ, ឯតទហោសិ: ‘ឥធ ភិក្ខុ សព្ពនិមិត្តានំ អមនសិការា អនិមិត្តំ ចេតោសមាធិំ ឧបសម្បជ្ជ វិហរតិ។ អយំ វុច្ចតិ អនិមិត្តោ ចេតោសមាធីៜតិ។
“They speak of this thing called the ‘signless samādhi of the mind’. What is the signless samādhi of the mind? It occurred to me: ‘It’s when a bhikkhu, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless samādhi of the mind. This is called the signless samādhi of the mind.’
សោ ខ្វាហំ, អាវុសោ, សព្ពនិមិត្តានំ អមនសិការា អនិមិត្តំ ចេតោសមាធិំ ឧបសម្បជ្ជ វិហរាមិ។ តស្ស មយ្ហំ, អាវុសោ, ឥមិនា វិហារេន វិហរតោ និមិត្តានុសារិ វិញ្ញាណំ ហោតិ។
And so … I was entering and remaining in the signless samādhi of the mind. While I was in that meditation, my consciousness followed after signs.
អថ ខោ មំ, អាវុសោ, ភគវា ឥទ្ធិយា ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ឯតទវោច: ‘មោគ្គល្លាន, មោគ្គល្លាន។ មា, ព្រាហ្មណ, អនិមិត្តំ ចេតោសមាធិំ បមាទោ, អនិមិត្តេ ចេតោសមាធិស្មិំ ចិត្តំ សណ្ឋបេហិ, អនិមិត្តេ ចេតោសមាធិស្មិំ ចិត្តំ ឯកោទិំ ករោហិ, អនិមិត្តេ ចេតោសមាធិស្មិំ ចិត្តំ សមាទហាៜតិ។
Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said, ‘Moggallāna, Moggallāna! Don’t neglect the signless samādhi of the mind, brahmin! Settle your mind in the signless samādhi of the mind; unify your mind and immerse it in the signless samādhi of the mind.’
សោ ខ្វាហំ, អាវុសោ, អបរេន សមយេន សព្ពនិមិត្តានំ អមនសិការា អនិមិត្តំ ចេតោសមាធិំ ឧបសម្បជ្ជ វិហាសិំ។
And so, after some time … I entered and remained in the signless samādhi of the mind.
យញ្ហិ តំ, អាវុសោ, សម្មា វទមានោ វទេយ្យ: ‘សត្ថារានុគ្គហិតោ សាវកោ មហាភិញ្ញតំ បត្តោៜតិ, មមំ តំ សម្មា វទមានោ វទេយ្យ: ‘សត្ថារានុគ្គហិតោ សាវកោ មហាភិញ្ញតំ បត្តោៜ”តិ។
So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, it’s me.”
