ปฐมโสวจสฺสตาสุตฺต
Easy to Admonish (1st)
“อิมํ, ภิกฺขเว, รตฺตึ อญฺญตรา เทวตา …เป… มํ เอตทโวจ: ‘สตฺติเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม สตฺต? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, สมาธิคารวตา, โสวจสฺสตา, กลฺยาณมิตฺตตาฯ อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, สตฺต ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, tonight a deity … said to me: ‘Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What seven? Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for samādhi; being easy to admonish, and good friendship. These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.’
อิทมโวจ, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตาฯ อิทํ วตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายีติฯ
That is what that deity said. Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.
สตฺถุครุ ธมฺมครุ, สงฺเฆ จ ติพฺพคารโว; สมาธิครุ อาตาปี, สิกฺขาย ติพฺพคารโวฯ
Respect for the Teacher and the teaching, and keen respect for the Saṅgha; respect for samādhi, being energetic, and keen respect for the training.
กลฺยาณมิตฺโต สุวโจ, สปฺปติโสฺส สคารโว; อภพฺโพ ปริหานาย, นิพฺพานเสฺสว สนฺติเก”ติฯ
One with good friends, easy to admonish, reverential and respectful, can’t decline, and has drawn near to Nibbana.”
