Easy to Admonish (2nd)
“อิมํ, ภิกฺขเว, รตฺตึ อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา …เป… ‘สตฺติเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม สตฺต? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, สมาธิคารวตา, โสวจสฺสตา, กลฺยาณมิตฺตตาฯ อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, สตฺต ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, tonight a deity … said to me: ‘Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What seven? Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for samādhi; being easy to admonish, and good friendship. These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.’
อิทมโวจ, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตาฯ อิทํ วตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายี”ติฯ
That is what that deity said. Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Buddha:
“อิมสฺส โข อหํ, ภนฺเต, ภควตา สงฺขิตฺเตน ภาสิตสฺส เอวํ วิตฺถาเรน อตฺถํ อาชานามิฯ
“Sir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement.
อิธ, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา จ สตฺถุคารโว โหติ, สตฺถุคารวตาย จ วณฺณวาทีฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น สตฺถุคารวา เต จ สตฺถุคารวตาย สมาทเปติฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู สตฺถุคารวา เตสญฺจ วณฺณํ ภณติ ภูตํ ตจฺฉํ กาเลนฯ
It’s when a bhikkhu personally respects the Teacher and praises such respect. And they encourage other bhikkhus who lack such respect to respect the Teacher. And they praise other bhikkhus who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
อตฺตนา จ ธมฺมคารโว โหติ …เป…

สงฺฆคารโว โหติ …
They personally respect the Saṅgha …
สิกฺขาคารโว โหติ …
They personally respect the training …
สมาธิคารโว โหติ …

กลฺยาณมิตฺโต โหติ, กลฺยาณมิตฺตตาย จ วณฺณวาทีฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น กลฺยาณมิตฺตา เต จ กลฺยาณมิตฺตตาย สมาทเปติฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู กลฺยาณมิตฺตา เตสญฺจ วณฺณํ ภณติ ภูตํ ตจฺฉํ กาเลนาติฯ
They personally have good friends, and praise such friendship. And they encourage other bhikkhus who lack good friends to develop good friendship. And they praise other bhikkhus who have good friends at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
อิมสฺส โข อหํ, ภนฺเต, ภควตา สงฺขิตฺเตน ภาสิตสฺส เอวํ วิตฺถาเรน อตฺถํ อาชานามี”ติฯ
That’s how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement.”
“สาธุ สาธุ, สาริปุตฺตฯ สาธุ โข ตฺวํ, สาริปุตฺต, อิมสฺส มยา สงฺขิตฺเตน ภาสิตสฺส เอวํ วิตฺถาเรน อตฺถํ อาชานาสิฯ
“Good, good, Sāriputta! It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.
อิธ, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา จ สตฺถุคารโว โหติ, สตฺถุคารวตาย จ วณฺณวาทีฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น สตฺถุคารวา เต จ สตฺถุคารวตาย สมาทเปติฯ เย จญฺเญ ภิกฺขู สตฺถุคารวา เตสญฺจ วณฺณํ ภณติ ภูตํ ตจฺฉํ กาเลนฯ
It’s when a bhikkhu personally respects the Teacher … And they encourage other bhikkhus who lack such respect to respect the Teacher. And they praise other bhikkhus who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
