อปฺปมาทคารวสุตฺต
Respect for Diligence
อถ โข อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ เชตวนํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข สา เทวตา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
“สตฺติเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม สตฺต? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, สมาธิคารวตา, อปฺปมาทคารวตา, ปฏิสนฺถารคารวตาฯ อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, สตฺต ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี”ติฯ
“Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What seven? Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for samādhi, for diligence, and for hospitality. These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.”
อิทมโวจ สา เทวตาฯ สมนุญฺโญ สตฺถา อโหสิฯ อถ โข สา เทวตา “สมนุญฺโญ เม สตฺถา”ติ ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายิฯ
That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
อถ โข ภควา ตสฺสา รตฺติยา อจฺจเยน ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “อิมํ, ภิกฺขเว, รตฺตึ อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ เชตวนํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยนาหํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตา มํ เอตทโวจ: ‘สตฺติเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม สตฺต? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, สมาธิคารวตา, อปฺปมาทคารวตา, ปฏิสนฺถารคารวตา—อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, สตฺต ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติฯ
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the bhikkhus all that had happened, adding:
อิทมโวจ, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตาฯ อิทํ วตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายีติฯ
สตฺถุครุ ธมฺมครุ, สงฺเฆ จ ติพฺพคารโว; สมาธิครุ อาตาปี, สิกฺขาย ติพฺพคารโวฯ
“Respect for the Teacher and the teaching, and keen respect for the Saṅgha; respect for samādhi, being energetic, and keen respect for the training.
อปฺปมาทครุ ภิกฺขุ, ปฏิสนฺถารคารโว; อภพฺโพ ปริหานาย, นิพฺพานเสฺสว สนฺติเก”ติฯ
A bhikkhu who respects diligence and hospitality can’t decline, and has drawn near to Nibbana.”
