Ten Regular Reflections for a Renunciate
“ทสยิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมา ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพาฯ กตเม ทส?
“Bhikkhus, one who has gone forth should often review these ten things. What ten?
‘เววณฺณิยมฺหิ อชฺฌุปคโต'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
One who has gone forth should often review this: ‘I have secured freedom from class.’
‘ปรปฏิพทฺธา เม ชีวิกา'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘My livelihood is tied up with others.’
‘อญฺโญ เม อากปฺโป กรณีโย'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘My behavior should be different.’
‘กจฺจิ นุ โข เม อตฺตา สีลโต น อุปวทตี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘I hope there’s no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct?’
‘กจฺจิ นุ โข มํ อนุวิจฺจ วิญฺญู สพฺรหฺมจารี สีลโต น อุปวทนฺตี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘I hope that, after examination, sensible spiritual companions don’t reproach any aspect of my ethics?’
‘สพฺเพหิ เม ปิเยหิ มนาเปหิ นานาภาโว วินาภาโว'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘I must be parted and separated from all I hold dear and beloved.’
‘กมฺมสฺสโกมฺหิ กมฺมทายาโท กมฺมโยนิ กมฺมพนฺธุ กมฺมปฏิสรโณ,
‘I am the owner of my deeds and heir to my deeds. Deeds are my womb, my relative, and my refuge.
ยํ กมฺมํ กริสฺสามิ กลฺยาณํ วา ปาปกํ วา ตสฺส ทายาโท ภวิสฺสามี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
I shall be the heir of whatever deeds I do, whether good or bad.’
‘กถํภูตสฺส เม รตฺตินฺทิวา วีติวตฺตนฺตี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘As the days and nights flit by, what sort of person am I becoming?’
‘กจฺจิ นุ โข อหํ สุญฺญาคาเร อภิรมามี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘Do I love to stay in empty huts?’
‘อตฺถิ นุ โข เม อุตฺตริ มนุสฺสธมฺโม อลมริยญาณทสฺสนวิเสโส อธิคโต, เยนาหํ ปจฺฉิเม กาเล สพฺรหฺมจารีหิ ปุฏฺโฐ น มงฺกุ ภวิสฺสามี'ติ ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพํฯ
‘Do I have any superhuman distinctions in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, so that when my spiritual companions question me on my deathbed I will not be embarrassed?’
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทส ธมฺมา ปพฺพชิเตน อภิณฺหํ ปจฺจเวกฺขิตพฺพา”ติฯ
One who has gone forth should often review these ten things.”
