สงฺฆสามคฺคีสุตฺต
Harmony in the Saṅgha
“‘สงฺฆสามคฺคี, สงฺฆสามคฺคี'ติ, ภนฺเต, วุจฺจติฯ กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, ภนฺเต, สงฺโฆ สมคฺโค โหตี”ติ?
“Sir, they speak of ‘harmony in the Saṅgha’. How is harmony in the Saṅgha defined?”
“อิธุปาลิ, ภิกฺขู อธมฺมํ อธมฺโมติ ทีเปนฺติ, ธมฺมํ ธมฺโมติ ทีเปนฺติ, อวินยํ อวินโยติ ทีเปนฺติ, วินยํ วินโยติ ทีเปนฺติ, อภาสิตํ อลปิตํ ตถาคเตน อภาสิตํ อลปิตํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติ, ภาสิตํ ลปิตํ ตถาคเตน ภาสิตํ ลปิตํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติ, อนาจิณฺณํ ตถาคเตน อนาจิณฺณํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติ, อาจิณฺณํ ตถาคเตน อาจิณฺณํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติ, อปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตน อปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติ, ปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตน ปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติฯ เต อิเมหิ ทสหิ วตฺถูหิ น อวกสฺสนฺติ น อปกสฺสนฺติ น อาเวนิ กมฺมานิ กโรนฺติ น อาเวนิ ปาติโมกฺขํ อุทฺทิสนฺติฯ เอตฺตาวตา โข, อุปาลิ, สงฺโฆ สมคฺโค โหตี”ติฯ
“Upāli, it’s when a bhikkhu explains what is not the teaching as not the teaching, and what is the teaching as the teaching. They explain what is not the training as not the training, and what is the training as the training. They explain what was not spoken and stated by the Realized One as not spoken and stated by the Realized One, and what was spoken and stated by the Realized One as spoken and stated by the Realized One. They explain what was not practiced by the Realized One as not practiced by the Realized One, and what was practiced by the Realized One as practiced by the Realized One. They explain what was not prescribed by the Realized One as not prescribed by the Realized One, and what was prescribed by the Realized One as prescribed by the Realized One. On these ten grounds they don’t split off and go their own way. They don’t perform legal acts autonomously or recite the monastic code autonomously. That is how harmony in the Saṅgha is defined.”
