ปฐมอานนฺทสุตฺต
With Ānanda (1st)
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
“‘สงฺฆเภโท สงฺฆเภโท'ติ, ภนฺเต, วุจฺจติฯ กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, ภนฺเต, สงฺโฆ ภินฺโน โหตี”ติ?
“Sir, they speak of ‘schism in the Saṅgha’. How is schism in the Saṅgha defined?”
“อิธานนฺท, ภิกฺขู อธมฺมํ ธมฺโมติ ทีเปนฺติ, ธมฺมํ อธมฺโมติ ทีเปนฺติ, อวินยํ วินโยติ ทีเปนฺติ …เป… ปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตน อปญฺญตฺตํ ตถาคเตนาติ ทีเปนฺติฯ เต อิเมหิ ทสหิ วตฺถูหิ อวกสฺสนฺติ อปกสฺสนฺติ อาเวนิ กมฺมานิ กโรนฺติ อาเวนิ ปาติโมกฺขํ อุทฺทิสนฺติฯ เอตฺตาวตา โข, อานนฺท, สงฺโฆ ภินฺโน โหตี”ติฯ
“Ānanda, it’s when a bhikkhu explains what is not the teaching as the teaching … and what was prescribed by the Realized One as not prescribed by the Realized One. On these ten grounds they split off and go their own way. They perform legal acts autonomously and recite the monastic code autonomously. That is how schism in the Saṅgha is defined.”
“สมคฺคํ ปน, ภนฺเต, สงฺฆํ ภินฺทิตฺวา กึ โส ปสวตี”ติ?
“But sir, what does someone who has split a harmonious Saṅgha bring upon themselves?”
“กปฺปฏฺฐิกํ, อานนฺท, กิพฺพิสํ ปสวตี”ติฯ
“They bring upon themselves evil that lasts for an eon.”
“กึ ปน, ภนฺเต, กปฺปฏฺฐิกํ กิพฺพิสนฺ”ติ?
“But sir, what is the evil that lasts for an eon?”
“กปฺปํ, อานนฺท, นิรยมฺหิ ปจฺจตีติ—
“They burn in hell for an eon, Ānanda.
อาปายิโก เนรยิโก, กปฺปฏฺโฐ สงฺฆเภทโก; วคฺครโต อธมฺมฏฺโฐ, โยคกฺเขมา ปธํสติ; สงฺฆํ สมคฺคํ ภินฺทิตฺวา, กปฺปํ นิรยมฺหิ ปจฺจตี”ติฯ
A schismatic remains for the eon in a place of loss, in hell. Taking a stand against the teaching, favoring factions, they ruin their sanctuary. After causing schism in a harmonious Saṅgha, they burn in hell for an eon.”
