With Mahāli
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา เวสาลิยํ วิหรติ มหาวเน กูฏาคารสาลายํฯ อถ โข มหาลิ ลิจฺฉวิ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข มหาลิ ลิจฺฉวิ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then Mahāli the Licchavi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“โก นุ โข, ภนฺเต, เหตุ, โก ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยา”ติ?
“What is the cause, sir, what is the reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds?”
“โลโภ โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, โลโภ ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ โทโส โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, โทโส ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ โมโห โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, โมโห ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ อโยนิโส มนสิกาโร โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อโยนิโส มนสิกาโร ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ มิจฺฉาปณิหิตํ โข, มหาลิ, จิตฺตํ เหตุ, มิจฺฉาปณิหิตํ จิตฺตํ ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาติฯ อยํ โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อยํ ปจฺจโย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย ปาปสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยา”ติฯ
“Greed is a cause, Mahāli, greed is a reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds. Hate is a cause of bad deeds … Delusion is a cause of bad deeds … Irrational application of mind is a cause of bad deeds … A wrongly directed mind is a cause of bad deeds … This is the cause, Mahāli, this is the reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds.”
“โก ปน, ภนฺเต, เหตุ โก ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยา”ติ?
“What is the cause, sir, what is the reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds?”
“อโลโภ โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อโลโภ ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ อโทโส โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อโทโส ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ อโมโห โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อโมโห ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ โยนิโส มนสิกาโร โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, โยนิโส มนสิกาโร ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ สมฺมาปณิหิตํ โข, มหาลิ, จิตฺตํ เหตุ, สมฺมาปณิหิตํ จิตฺตํ ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ อยํ โข, มหาลิ, เหตุ, อยํ ปจฺจโย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส กิริยาย กลฺยาณสฺส กมฺมสฺส ปวตฺติยาฯ อิเม จ, มหาลิ, ทส ธมฺมา โลเก น สํวิชฺเชยฺยุํ, นยิธ ปญฺญาเยถ อธมฺมจริยาวิสมจริยาติ วา ธมฺมจริยาสมจริยาติ วาฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, มหาลิ, อิเม ทส ธมฺมา โลเก สํวิชฺชนฺติ, ตสฺมา ปญฺญายติ อธมฺมจริยาวิสมจริยาติ วา ธมฺมจริยาสมจริยาติ วา”ติฯ
“Contentment is a cause, Mahāli, contentment is a reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds. Love is a cause of good deeds … Understanding is a cause of good deeds … Rational application of mind is a cause of good deeds … A rightly directed mind is a cause of good deeds … This is the cause, Mahāli, this is the reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds. If these ten things were not found in the world, we wouldn’t see either unprincipled and immoral conduct, or principled and moral conduct. But since these ten things are found in the world, we see both unprincipled and immoral conduct, and principled and moral conduct.”
