Characteristics
“กมฺมลกฺขโณ, ภิกฺขเว, พาโล, กมฺมลกฺขโณ ปณฺฑิโต, อปทานโสภนี ปญฺญาติฯ ตีหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต พาโล เวทิตพฺโพฯ กตเมหิ ตีหิ? กายทุจฺจริเตน, วจีทุจฺจริเตน, มโนทุจฺจริเตนฯ
“A fool is characterized by their deeds, and an astute person is characterized by their deeds, for wisdom shows in its traces. A fool is known by three things. What three? Bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต พาโล เวทิตพฺโพฯ
These are the three things by which a fool is known.
ตีหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ปณฺฑิโต เวทิตพฺโพฯ กตเมหิ ตีหิ? กายสุจริเตน, วจีสุจริเตน, มโนสุจริเตนฯ
An astute person is known by three things. What three? Good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ปณฺฑิโต เวทิตพฺโพฯ
These are the three things by which an astute person is known.
ตสฺมาติห, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ สิกฺขิตพฺพํ: ‘เยหิ ตีหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต พาโล เวทิตพฺโพ เต ตโย ธมฺเม อภินิวชฺเชตฺวา, เยหิ ตีหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ปณฺฑิโต เวทิตพฺโพ เต ตโย ธมฺเม สมาทาย วตฺติสฺสามา'ติฯ เอวญฺหิ โว, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขิตพฺพนฺ”ติฯ
So you should train like this: ‘We will reject the three things by which a fool is known, and we will undertake and follow the three things by which an astute person is known.’ That’s how you should train.”
