อถ โข อนาถปิณฺฑิโก คหปติ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อนาถปิณฺฑิกํ คหปตึ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“จตูหิ โข, คหปติ, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อริยสาวโก คิหิสามีจิปฏิปทํ ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ ยโสปฏิลาภินึ สคฺคสํวตฺตนิกํฯ กตเมหิ จตูหิ? อิธ, คหปติ, อริยสาวโก ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ ปจฺจุปฏฺฐิโต โหติ จีวเรน, ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ ปจฺจุปฏฺฐิโต โหติ ปิณฺฑปาเตน, ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ ปจฺจุปฏฺฐิโต โหติ เสนาสเนน, ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ ปจฺจุปฏฺฐิโต โหติ คิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขาเรนฯ อิเมหิ โข, คหปติ, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อริยสาวโก คิหิสามีจิปฏิปทํ ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ ยโสปฏิลาภินึ สคฺคสํวตฺตนิกนฺติฯ
“Householder, when a noble disciple does four things they are practicing appropriately for a layperson, which brings fame and leads to heaven. What four? It’s when a noble disciple serves the bhikkhu Saṅgha with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. When a noble disciple does these four things they are practicing appropriately for a layperson, which brings fame and leads to heaven.
คิหิสามีจิปฏิปทํ, ปฏิปชฺชนฺติ ปณฺฑิตา; สมฺมคฺคเต สีลวนฺเต, จีวเรน อุปฏฺฐิตาฯ
Those who are astute practice the way that’s appropriate for laypeople. They provide those who are ethical and on the right path with robes,
ปิณฺฑปาตสยเนน, คิลานปฺปจฺจเยน จ; เตสํ ทิวา จ รตฺโต จ, สทา ปุญฺญํ ปวฑฺฒติ; สคฺคญฺจ กมติฏฺฐานํ, กมฺมํ กตฺวาน ภทฺทกนฺ”ติฯ
almsfood, lodgings, and supplies for the sick. Their merit always grows by day and by night. They pass on to a place in heaven, having done excellent deeds.”

ตสฺสุทฺทานํ
เทฺว ปุญฺญาภิสนฺทา เทฺว จ, สํวาสา สมชีวิโน; สุปฺปวาสา สุทตฺโต จ, โภชนํ คิหิสามิจีติฯ
