“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลสา, เยหิ อุปกฺกิเลเสหิ อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร? อพฺภา, ภิกฺขเว, จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลสา, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ มหิกา, ภิกฺขเว, จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลสา, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ ธูโม รโช, ภิกฺขเว, จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลโส, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ ราหุ, ภิกฺขเว, อสุรินฺโท จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลโส, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร จนฺทิมสูริยานํ อุปกฺกิเลสา, เยหิ อุปกฺกิเลเสหิ อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา จนฺทิมสูริยา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ
“Bhikkhus, these four corruptions obscure the sun and moon, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate. What four? Clouds … Fog … Smoke … An eclipse of Rāhu, lord of demons … These are four corruptions that obscure the sun and moon, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโรเม สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ อุปกฺกิเลสา, เยหิ อุปกฺกิเลเสหิ อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
In the same way, these four things corrupt ascetics and brahmins, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate. What four?
สนฺติ, ภิกฺขเว, เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา สุรํ ปิวนฺติ เมรยํ, สุราเมรยปานา อปฺปฏิวิรตาฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ อุปกฺกิเลโส, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ
There are some ascetics and brahmins who drink liquor, not avoiding drinking liquor. This is the first thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins …
สนฺติ, ภิกฺขเว, เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา เมถุนํ ธมฺมํ ปฏิเสวนฺติ, เมถุนสฺมา ธมฺมา อปฺปฏิวิรตาฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ อุปกฺกิเลโส, เยน อุปกฺกิเลเสน อุปกฺกิลิฏฺฐา เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ น วิโรจนฺติฯ

These are four things that corrupt ascetics and brahmins, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.
ราคโทสปริกฺกิฏฺฐา, เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา; อวิชฺชานิวุตา โปสา, ปิยรูปาภินนฺทิโนฯ
Some ascetics and brahmins are plagued by greed and hate; men shrouded by ignorance, enjoying things that seem pleasant.
สุรํ ปิวนฺติ เมรยํ, ปฏิเสวนฺติ เมถุนํ; รชตํ ชาตรูปญฺจ, สาทิยนฺติ อวิทฺทสู; มิจฺฉาชีเวน ชีวนฺติ, เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณาฯ
Drinking liquor, having sex, accepting money and gold: they’re ignorant. Some ascetics and brahmins make a living the wrong way.
เอเต อุปกฺกิเลสา วุตฺตา, พุทฺเธนาทิจฺจพนฺธุนา; เยหิ อุปกฺกิเลเสหิ, เอเก สมณพฺราหฺมณา; น ตปนฺติ น ภาสนฺติ, อสุทฺธา สรชา มคาฯ
These corruptions were spoken of by the Buddha, kinsman of the Sun. When corrupted by these, some ascetics and brahmins don’t shine or glow. Impure, dirty creatures,
อนฺธกาเรน โอนทฺธา, ตณฺหาทาสา สเนตฺติกา; วฑฺเฒนฺติ กฏสึ โฆรํ, อาทิยนฺติ ปุนพฺภวนฺ”ติฯ
shrouded in darkness, bondservants of craving, full of attachments, swell the horrors of the charnel ground, taking up future lives.”

โรหิตสฺสวคฺโค ปญฺจโมฯ
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ
สมาธิปญฺหา เทฺว โกธา, โรหิตสฺสาปเร ทุเว; สุวิทูรวิสาขวิปลฺลาสา, อุปกฺกิเลเสน เต ทสาติฯ
