Ways of Answering Questions
“จตฺตาริมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺหพฺยากรณานิฯ กตมานิ จตฺตาริ? อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปโญฺห เอกํสพฺยากรณีโย; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปโญฺห วิภชฺชพฺยากรณีโย; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปโญฺห ปฏิปุจฺฉาพฺยากรณีโย; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปโญฺห ฐปนีโยฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of answering questions. What four? There is a question that should be answered definitively. There is a question that should be answered analytically. There is a question that should be answered with a counter-question. There is a question that should be set aside.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาริ ปญฺหพฺยากรณานีติฯ
These are the four ways of answering questions.
เอกํสวจนํ เอกํ, วิภชฺชวจนาปรํ; ตติยํ ปฏิปุจฺเฉยฺย, จตุตฺถํ ปน ฐาปเยฯ
One is stated definitively, another analytically, a third with a counter-question, while a fourth is set aside.
โย จ เตสํ ตตฺถ ตตฺถ, ชานาติ อนุธมฺมตํ; จตุปญฺหสฺส กุสโล, อาหุ ภิกฺขุํ ตถาวิธํฯ
A bhikkhu who knows each of these, in line with good principles, is said to be skilled in the four kinds of questions.
ทุราสโท ทุปฺปสโห, คมฺภีโร ทุปฺปธํสิโย; อโถ อตฺเถ อนตฺเถ จ, อุภยสฺส โหติ โกวิโทฯ
They’re intimidating, hard to defeat, deep, and hard to crush. They’re expert in both what the meaning is and what it isn’t.
อนตฺถํ ปริวชฺเชติ, อตฺถํ คณฺหาติ ปณฺฑิโต; อตฺถาภิสมยา ธีโร, ปณฺฑิโตติ ปวุจฺจตี”ติฯ
Rejecting what is not the meaning, an astute person grasps the meaning. A wise one, comprehending the meaning, is said to be astute.”
