Very Far Apart
“จตฺตาริมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สุวิทูรวิทูรานิฯ กตมานิ จตฺตาริ? นภญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปถวี จ; อิทํ ปฐมํ สุวิทูรวิทูเรฯ โอริมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ตีรํ สมุทฺทสฺส ปาริมญฺจ; อิทํ ทุติยํ สุวิทูรวิทูเรฯ ยโต จ, ภิกฺขเว, เวโรจโน อพฺภุเทติ ยตฺถ จ อตฺถเมติ; อิทํ ตติยํ สุวิทูรวิทูเรฯ สตญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺโม อสตญฺจ ธมฺโม; อิทํ จตุตฺถํ สุวิทูรวิทูเรฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาริ สุวิทูรวิทูรานีติฯ
“Bhikkhus, these four things are very far apart. What four? The sky and the earth. … The near and the far shore of the ocean. … Where the sun rises and where it sets. … The teaching of the virtuous and the teaching of the wicked. … These are the four things very far apart.
นภญฺจ ทูเร ปถวี จ ทูเร, ปารํ สมุทฺทสฺส ตทาหุ ทูเร; ยโต จ เวโรจโน อพฺภุเทติ, ปภงฺกโร ยตฺถ จ อตฺถเมติ; ตโต หเว ทูรตรํ วทนฺติ, สตญฺจ ธมฺมํ อสตญฺจ ธมฺมํฯ
The sky is far from the earth; they say the other shore of the ocean is far; and where the sun rises is far from where that beacon sets. But even further apart than that, they say, is the teaching of the virtuous from the wicked.
อพฺยายิโก โหติ สตํ สมาคโม, ยาวาปิ ติฏฺเฐยฺย ตเถว โหติ; ขิปฺปญฺหิ เวติ อสตํ สมาคโม, ตสฺมา สตํ ธมฺโม อสพฺภิ อารกา”ติฯ
The company of the virtuous is reliable; as long as it remains, it stays the same. But the company of the wicked is fickle, and so the teaching of the virtuous
