Living Together (1st)
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา อนฺตรา จ มธุรํ อนฺตรา จ เวรญฺชํ อทฺธานมคฺคปฺปฏิปนฺโน โหติฯ สมฺพหุลาปิ โข คหปตี จ คหปตานิโย จ อนฺตรา จ มธุรํ อนฺตรา จ เวรญฺชํ อทฺธานมคฺคปฺปฏิปนฺนา โหนฺติฯ อถ โข ภควา มคฺคา โอกฺกมฺม อญฺญตรสฺมึ รุกฺขมูเล (…) นิสีทิฯ อทฺทสํสุ โข คหปตี จ คหปตานิโย จ ภควนฺตํ อญฺญตรสฺมึ รุกฺขมูเล นิสินฺนํฯ
At one time the Buddha was traveling along the road between Madhurā and Verañja, as were several householders, both women and men. The Buddha left the road and sat at the root of a tree, where the householders saw him.
ทิสฺวา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺเน โข เต คหปตี จ คหปตานิโย จ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
They went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to them:
“จตฺตาโรเม, คหปตโย, สํวาสาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Householders, there are four ways of living together. What four?
ฉโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติ,
A male zombie living with a female zombie;
ฉโว เทวิยา สทฺธึ สํวสติ,
a male zombie living with a goddess;
เทโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติ,
a god living with a female zombie;
เทโว เทวิยา สทฺธึ สํวสติฯ
a god living with a goddess.
กถญฺจ, คหปตโย, ฉโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติ? อิธ, คหปตโย, สามิโก โหติ ปาณาติปาตี อทินฺนาทายี กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารี มุสาวาที สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐายี ทุสฺสีโล ปาปธมฺโม มจฺเฉรมลปริยุฏฺฐิเตน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อกฺโกสกปริภาสโก สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ; ภริยาปิสฺส โหติ ปาณาติปาตินี อทินฺนาทายินี กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารินี มุสาวาทินี สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐายินี ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมา มจฺเฉรมลปริยุฏฺฐิเตน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อกฺโกสิกปริภาสิกา สมณพฺราหฺมณานํฯ เอวํ โข, คหปตโย, ฉโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติฯ
And how does a male zombie live with a female zombie? It’s when the husband kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and uses alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. He’s unethical, of bad character, living at home with his heart full of the stain of stinginess, abusing and insulting ascetics and brahmins. And the wife is also … unethical, of bad character … That’s how a male zombie lives with a female zombie.
กถญฺจ, คหปตโย, ฉโว เทวิยา สทฺธึ สํวสติ? อิธ, คหปตโย, สามิโก โหติ ปาณาติปาตี อทินฺนาทายี กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารี มุสาวาที สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐายี ทุสฺสีโล ปาปธมฺโม มจฺเฉรมลปริยุฏฺฐิเตน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อกฺโกสกปริภาสโก สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ; ภริยา ขฺวสฺส โหติ ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรตา อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรตา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรตา มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรตา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรตา สีลวตี กลฺยาณธมฺมา วิคตมลมจฺเฉเรน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อนกฺโกสิกปริภาสิกา สมณพฺราหฺมณานํฯ เอวํ โข, คหปตโย, ฉโว เทวิยา สทฺธึ สํวสติฯ
And how does a male zombie live with a goddess? It’s when the husband … is unethical, of bad character … But the wife doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or use alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. She’s ethical, of good character, living at home with her heart rid of the stain of stinginess, not abusing and insulting ascetics and brahmins. That’s how a male zombie lives with a goddess.
กถญฺจ, คหปตโย, เทโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติ? อิธ, คหปตโย, สามิโก โหติ ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโต อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโต กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโต มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโต สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรโต สีลวา กลฺยาณธมฺโม วิคตมลมจฺเฉเรน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อนกฺโกสกปริภาสโก สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ; ภริยา ขฺวสฺส โหติ ปาณาติปาตินี …เป… สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐายินี ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมา มจฺเฉรมลปริยุฏฺฐิเตน เจตสา อคารํ อชฺฌาวสติ อกฺโกสิกปริภาสิกา สมณพฺราหฺมณานํฯ เอวํ โข, คหปตโย, เทโว ฉวาย สทฺธึ สํวสติฯ
And how does a god live with a female zombie? It’s when the husband … is ethical, of good character … But the wife … is unethical, of bad character … That’s how a god lives with a female zombie.

And how does a god live with a goddess? It’s when the husband … is ethical, of good character … And the wife is also … ethical, of good character … That’s how a god lives with a goddess.
อิเม โข, คหปตโย, จตฺตาโร สํวาสาติฯ
These are the four ways of living together.
อุโภ จ โหนฺติ ทุสฺสีลา, กทริยา ปริภาสกา; เต โหนฺติ ชานิปตโย, ฉวา สํวาสมาคตาฯ
When both are unethical, miserly and abusive, then wife and husband live together as zombies.
สามิโก โหติ ทุสฺสีโล, กทริโย ปริภาสโก; ภริยา สีลวตี โหติ, วทญฺญู วีตมจฺฉรา; สาปิ เทวี สํวสติ, ฉเวน ปตินา สหฯ
When the husband is unethical, miserly and abusive, but the wife is ethical, bountiful, rid of stinginess, she’s a goddess living with a zombie for a husband.
สามิโก สีลวา โหติ, วทญฺญู วีตมจฺฉโร; ภริยา โหติ ทุสฺสีลา, กทริยา ปริภาสิกา; สาปิ ฉวา สํวสติ, เทเวน ปตินา สหฯ
When the husband is ethical, bountiful, rid of stinginess, but the wife is unethical, miserly and abusive, she’s a zombie living with a god for a husband.
อุโภ สทฺธา วทญฺญู จ, สญฺญตา ธมฺมชีวิโน; เต โหนฺติ ชานิปตโย, อญฺญมญฺญํ ปิยํวทาฯ
When both are faithful and bountiful, disciplined, living righteously, then wife and husband say nice things to each other.
อตฺถาสํ ปจุรา โหนฺติ, ผาสุกํ อุปชายติ; อมิตฺตา ทุมฺมนา โหนฺติ, อุภินฺนํ สมสีลินํฯ
They get all the things they need, so they live at ease. Their enemies are downhearted, when both are equal in ethics.
อิธ ธมฺมํ จริตฺวาน, สมสีลพฺพตา อุโภ; นนฺทิโน เทวโลกสฺมึ, โมทนฺติ กามกามิโน”ติฯ
Having practiced the teaching here, both equal in precepts and observances, they delight in the heavenly realm, enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”
