“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเม อปฺปหาย อภพฺโพ ทุติยํ ฌานํ …เป… อภพฺโพ ตติยํ ฌานํ … อภพฺโพ จตุตฺถํ ฌานํ … อภพฺโพ โสตาปตฺติผลํ … อภพฺโพ สกทาคามิผลํ … อภพฺโพ อนาคามิผลํ … อภพฺโพ อรหตฺตํ สจฺฉิกาตุํฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? อาวาสมจฺฉริยํ, กุลมจฺฉริยํ, ลาภมจฺฉริยํ, วณฺณมจฺฉริยํ, ธมฺมมจฺฉริยํฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ธมฺเม อปฺปหาย อภพฺโพ อรหตฺตํ สจฺฉิกาตุํฯ
“Bhikkhus, without giving up these five qualities you can’t enter and remain in the second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna … or realize the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-return … the fruit of non-return … perfection. What five? Stinginess with dwellings, families, material possessions, praise, and the teachings. Without giving up these five qualities you can’t realize perfection.
ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเม ปหาย ภพฺโพ ทุติยํ ฌานํ …เป… ภพฺโพ ตติยํ ฌานํ … ภพฺโพ จตุตฺถํ ฌานํ … ภพฺโพ โสตาปตฺติผลํ … ภพฺโพ สกทาคามิผลํ … ภพฺโพ อนาคามิผลํ … ภพฺโพ อรหตฺตํ สจฺฉิกาตุํฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? อาวาสมจฺฉริยํ, กุลมจฺฉริยํ, ลาภมจฺฉริยํ, วณฺณมจฺฉริยํ, ธมฺมมจฺฉริยํฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ธมฺเม ปหาย ภพฺโพ อรหตฺตํ สจฺฉิกาตุนฺ”ติฯ
But after giving up these five qualities you can enter and remain in the second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna … and realize the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-return … the fruit of non-return … perfection. What five? Stinginess with dwellings, families, material possessions, praise, and the teachings. After giving up these five qualities you can realize perfection.”
