สิวถิกสุตฺต
A Charnel Ground
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, อาทีนวา สิวถิกายฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks to a charnel ground. What five?
อสุจิ, ทุคฺคนฺธา, สปฺปฏิภยา, วาฬานํ อมนุสฺสานํ อาวาโส, พหุโน ชนสฺส อาโรทนา—อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ อาทีนวา สิวถิกายฯ
It’s filthy, stinking, frightening, a gathering place for savage monsters, and a weeping place for many people. These are the five drawbacks of a charnel ground.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจิเม อาทีนวา สิวถิกูปเม ปุคฺคเลฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อสุจินา กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ; อสุจินา วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ; อสุจินา มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติฯ อิทมสฺส อสุจิตาย วทามิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, สิวถิกา อสุจิ; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
In the same way there are five drawbacks of a person like a charnel ground. What five? To start with, some person has filthy conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is how they’re filthy, I say. That person is just as filthy as a charnel ground.
ตสฺส อสุจินา กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตสฺส, อสุจินา วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตสฺส, อสุจินา มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตสฺส ปาปโก กิตฺติสทฺโท อพฺภุคฺคจฺฉติฯ อิทมสฺส ทุคฺคนฺธตาย วทามิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, สิวถิกา ทุคฺคนฺธา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
Because of their filthy conduct, they get a bad reputation. This is how they’re stinky, I say. That person is just as stinky as a charnel ground.
ตเมนํ อสุจินา กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ, อสุจินา วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ, อสุจินา มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ เปสลา สพฺรหฺมจารี อารกา ปริวชฺชนฺติฯ อิทมสฺส สปฺปฏิภยสฺมึ วทามิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, สิวถิกา สปฺปฏิภยา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
Because of their filthy conduct, good-hearted spiritual companions avoid them from afar. That’s how they’re frightening, I say. That person is just as frightening as a charnel ground.
โส อสุจินา กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต, อสุจินา วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต, อสุจินา มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต สภาเคหิ ปุคฺคเลหิ สทฺธึ สํวสติฯ อิทมสฺส วาฬาวาสสฺมึ วทามิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, สิวถิกา วาฬานํ อมนุสฺสานํ อาวาโส; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
Because of their filthy conduct, they live together with people of a similar character. This is how they gather with savage monsters, I say. That person is just as much a gathering place of savage monsters as a charnel ground.
ตเมนํ อสุจินา กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ, อสุจินา วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ, อสุจินา มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ เปสลา สพฺรหฺมจารี ทิสฺวา ขียธมฺมํ อาปชฺชนฺติ: ‘อโห วต โน ทุกฺขํ เย มยํ เอวรูเปหิ ปุคฺคเลหิ สทฺธึ สํวสามา'ติฯ อิทมสฺส อาโรทนาย วทามิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, สิวถิกา พหุโน ชนสฺส อาโรทนา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
Because of their filthy conduct, when good-hearted spiritual companions see them they complain: ‘Oh, it’s so painful for us to have to live together with such as these.’ This is how there’s weeping, I say. This person is just as much a weeping place for many people as a charnel ground.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ อาทีนวา สิวถิกูปเม ปุคฺคเล”ติฯ
These are the five drawbacks of a person like a charnel ground.”
