Faith in Individuals
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, อาทีนวา ปุคฺคลปฺปสาเทฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual. What five?
ยสฺมึ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคเล ปุคฺคโล อภิปฺปสนฺโน โหติ, โส ตถารูปํ อาปตฺตึ อาปนฺโน โหติ ยถารูปาย อาปตฺติยา สงฺโฆ อุกฺขิปติฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘โย โข มฺยายํ ปุคฺคโล ปิโย มนาโป โส สงฺเฆน อุกฺขิตฺโต'ติฯ ภิกฺขูสุ อปฺปสาทพหุโล โหติฯ ภิกฺขูสุ อปฺปสาทพหุโล สมาโน อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น ภชติฯ อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู อภชนฺโต สทฺธมฺมํ น สุณาติฯ สทฺธมฺมํ อสุณนฺโต สทฺธมฺมา ปริหายติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม อาทีนโว ปุคฺคลปฺปสาเทฯ
The individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha suspends them. It occurs to them: ‘This person dear and beloved to me has been suspended by the Saṅgha.’ They lose much of their faith in bhikkhus. So they don’t frequent other bhikkhus, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the first drawback in placing faith in an individual.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, ยสฺมึ ปุคฺคเล ปุคฺคโล อภิปฺปสนฺโน โหติ, โส ตถารูปํ อาปตฺตึ อาปนฺโน โหติ ยถารูปาย อาปตฺติยา สงฺโฆ อนฺเต นิสีทาเปติฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘โย โข มฺยายํ ปุคฺคโล ปิโย มนาโป โส สงฺเฆน อนฺเต นิสีทาปิโต'ติฯ ภิกฺขูสุ อปฺปสาทพหุโล โหติฯ ภิกฺขูสุ อปฺปสาทพหุโล สมาโน อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น ภชติฯ อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู อภชนฺโต สทฺธมฺมํ น สุณาติฯ สทฺธมฺมํ อสุณนฺโต สทฺธมฺมา ปริหายติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย อาทีนโว ปุคฺคลปฺปสาเทฯ
Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha makes them sit at the end of the line. … This is the second drawback in placing faith in an individual.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, ยสฺมึ ปุคฺคเล ปุคฺคโล อภิปฺปสนฺโน โหติ, โส ทิสาปกฺกนฺโต โหติ …เป… โส วิพฺภนฺโต โหติ …เป… โส กาลงฺกโต โหติฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘โย โข มฺยายํ ปุคฺคโล ปิโย มนาโป โส กาลงฺกโต'ติฯ อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู น ภชติฯ อญฺเญ ภิกฺขู อภชนฺโต สทฺธมฺมํ น สุณาติฯ สทฺธมฺมํ อสุณนฺโต สทฺธมฺมา ปริหายติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจโม อาทีนโว ปุคฺคลปฺปสาเทฯ
Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted departs for another region … disrobes … passes away. It occurs to them: ‘This person dear and beloved to me has passed away.’ So they don’t frequent other bhikkhus, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the fifth drawback in placing faith in an individual.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ อาทีนวา ปุคฺคลปฺปสาเท”ติฯ
These are the five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.”
