Bad Conduct (2nd)
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, อาทีนวา ทุจฺจริเตฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? อตฺตาปิ อตฺตานํ อุปวทติ; อนุวิจฺจ วิญฺญู ครหนฺติ; ปาปโก กิตฺติสทฺโท อพฺภุคฺคจฺฉติ; สทฺธมฺมา วุฏฺฐาติ; อสทฺธมฺเม ปติฏฺฐาติฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ อาทีนวา ทุจฺจริเตฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks of bad conduct. What five? You blame yourself. After examination, sensible people criticize you. You get a bad reputation. You drift away from true teachings. You settle on untrue teachings. These are the five drawbacks of bad conduct.
ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, อานิสํสา สุจริเตฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? อตฺตาปิ อตฺตานํ น อุปวทติ; อนุวิจฺจ วิญฺญู ปสํสนฺติ; กลฺยาโณ กิตฺติสทฺโท อพฺภุคฺคจฺฉติ; อสทฺธมฺมา วุฏฺฐาติ; สทฺธมฺเม ปติฏฺฐาติฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ อานิสํสา สุจริเต”ติฯ
There are these five benefits of good conduct. What five? You don’t blame yourself. After examination, sensible people praise you. You get a good reputation. You drift away from untrue teachings. You settle on true teachings. These are the five benefits of good conduct.”
