Who Should Have a Novice as Attendant
“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคเตน ภิกฺขุนา สามเณโร อุปฏฺฐาเปตพฺโพฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อเสเขน สีลกฺขนฺเธน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ; อเสเขน สมาธิกฺขนฺเธน … อเสเขน ปญฺญากฺขนฺเธน … อเสเขน วิมุตฺติกฺขนฺเธน … อเสเขน วิมุตฺติญาณทสฺสนกฺขนฺเธน สมนฺนาคโต โหติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคเตน ภิกฺขุนา สามเณโร อุปฏฺฐาเปตพฺโพ”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, a novice should attend on a bhikkhu with five qualities. What five? It’s a bhikkhu who has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, samādhi, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. A novice should attend on a bhikkhu with these five qualities.”
