Bases of Psychic Power (2nd)
“ปุพฺเพวาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, สมฺโพธา อนภิสมฺพุทฺโธ โพธิสตฺโตว สมาโน ปญฺจ ธมฺเม ภาเวสึ, ปญฺจ ธมฺเม พหุลีกาสึฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
“Bhikkhus, before my awakening—when I was still not awake but intent on awakening—I developed and cultivated five things. What five?
ฉนฺทสมาธิปธานสงฺขารสมนฺนาคตํ อิทฺธิปาทํ ภาเวสึ, วีริยสมาธิ … จิตฺตสมาธิ … วีมํสาสมาธิปธานสงฺขารสมนฺนาคตํ อิทฺธิปาทํ ภาเวสึ, อุโสฺสฬฺหิญฺเญว ปญฺจมึฯ
The basis of psychic power that has samādhi due to enthusiasm, and active effort … the basis of psychic power that has samādhi due to energy, and active effort … the basis of psychic power that has samādhi due to mental development, and active effort … the basis of psychic power that has samādhi due to inquiry, and active effort. And the fifth is sheer vigor.
โส โข อหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเมสํ อุโสฺสฬฺหิปญฺจมานํ ธมฺมานํ ภาวิตตฺตา พหุลีกตตฺตา ยสฺส ยสฺส อภิญฺญาสจฺฉิกรณียสฺส ธมฺมสฺส จิตฺตํ อภินินฺนาเมสึ อภิญฺญาสจฺฉิกิริยาย, ตตฺร ตเตฺรว สกฺขิภพฺพตํ ปาปุณึ สติ สติ อายตเนฯ
When I had developed and cultivated these five things, with vigor as fifth, I became capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which I extended the mind, in each and every case.
โส สเจ อากงฺขึ: ‘อเนกวิหิตํ อิทฺธิวิธํ ปจฺจนุภเวยฺยํ …เป… ยาว พฺรหฺมโลกาปิ กาเยน วสํ วตฺเตยฺยนฺ'ติ, ตตฺร ตเตฺรว สกฺขิภพฺพตํ ปาปุณึ สติ สติ อายตเนฯ
If I wished: ‘May I multiply myself and become one again … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm.’ I was capable of realizing it, in each and every case.
โส สเจ อากงฺขึ …เป… ‘อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหเรยฺยนฺ'ติ, ตตฺร ตเตฺรว สกฺขิภพฺพตํ ปาปุณึ สติ สติ อายตเน”ติฯ
If I wished: … ‘May I realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ I was capable of realizing it, in each and every case.”
