Verahaccāni
एकं समयं आयस्मा उदायी कामण्डायं विहरति तोदेय्यस्स ब्राह्मणस्स अम्बवने।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā udāyī kāmaṇḍāyaṁ viharati todeyyassa brāhmaṇassa ambavane.
At one time Venerable Udāyī was staying near Kāmaṇḍā in the brahmin Todeyya’s mango grove.
अथ खो वेरहच्चानिगोत्ताय ब्राह्मणिया अन्तेवासी माणवको येनायस्मा उदायी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता उदायिना सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो तं माणवकं आयस्मा उदायी धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेसि समादपेसि समुत्तेजेसि सम्पहंसेसि।
Atha kho verahaccānigottāya brāhmaṇiyā antevāsī māṇavako yenāyasmā udāyī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā udāyinā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ māṇavakaṁ āyasmā udāyī dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi samādapesi samuttejesi sampahaṁsesi.
Then a boy who was a student of the brahmin lady of the Verahaccāni clan went up to Udāyī and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. Udāyī educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired that student with a Dhamma talk.
अथ खो सो माणवको आयस्मता उदायिना धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सितो समादपितो समुत्तेजितो सम्पहंसितो उट्ठायासना येन वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा वेरहच्चानिगोत्तं ब्राह्मणिं एतदवोच: “यग्घे, भोति, जानेय्यासि। समणो उदायी धम्मं देसेति आदिकल्याणं मज्झेकल्याणं परियोसानकल्याणं, सात्थं सब्यञ्जनं केवलपरिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं पकासेती”ति।
Atha kho so māṇavako āyasmatā udāyinā dhammiyā kathāya sandassito samādapito samuttejito sampahaṁsito uṭṭhāyāsanā yena verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā verahaccānigottaṁ brāhmaṇiṁ etadavoca: “yagghe, bhoti, jāneyyāsi. Samaṇo udāyī dhammaṁ deseti ādikalyāṇaṁ majjhekalyāṇaṁ pariyosānakalyāṇaṁ, sātthaṁ sabyañjanaṁ kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ pakāsetī”ti.
Then that student went to the brahmin lady of the Verahaccāni clan and said to her, “Please, madam, you should know this. The ascetic Udāyī teaches Dhamma that’s good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And he reveals a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure.”
“तेन हि त्वं, माणवक, मम वचनेन समणं उदायिं निमन्तेहि स्वातनाय भत्तेना”ति।
“Tena hi tvaṁ, māṇavaka, mama vacanena samaṇaṁ udāyiṁ nimantehi svātanāya bhattenā”ti.
“Then, student, invite him in my name for tomorrow’s meal.”
“एवं, भोती”ति खो सो माणवको वेरहच्चानिगोत्ताय ब्राह्मणिया पटिस्सुत्वा येनायस्मा उदायी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं उदायिं एतदवोच: “अधिवासेतु किर, भवं उदायी अम्हाकं आचरियभरियाय वेरहच्चानिगोत्ताय ब्राह्मणिया स्वातनाय भत्तन्”ति। अधिवासेसि खो आयस्मा उदायी तुण्हीभावेन।
“Evaṁ, bhotī”ti kho so māṇavako verahaccānigottāya brāhmaṇiyā paṭissutvā yenāyasmā udāyī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ etadavoca: “adhivāsetu kira, bhavaṁ udāyī amhākaṁ ācariyabhariyāya verahaccānigottāya brāhmaṇiyā svātanāya bhattan”ti. Adhivāsesi kho āyasmā udāyī tuṇhībhāvena.
“Yes, madam,” he replied. He went to Udāyī and said, “Sir, might Master Udāyī please accept an offering of tomorrow’s meal from my teacher’s wife, the brahmin lady of the Verahaccāni clan.” Udāyī consented with silence.
अथ खो आयस्मा उदायी तस्सा रत्तिया अच्चयेन पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन वेरहच्चानिगोत्ताय ब्राह्मणिया निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। अथ खो वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी आयस्मन्तं उदायिं पणीतेन खादनीयेन भोजनीयेन सहत्था सन्तप्पेसि सम्पवारेसि।
Atha kho āyasmā udāyī tassā rattiyā accayena pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena verahaccānigottāya brāhmaṇiyā nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.
Then when the night had passed, Udāyī robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the brahmin lady’s home, and sat down on the seat spread out. Then the brahmin lady served and satisfied Udāyī with her own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods.
अथ खो वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी आयस्मन्तं उदायिं भुत्ताविं ओनीतपत्तपाणिं पादुका आरोहित्वा उच्चे आसने निसीदित्वा सीसं ओगुण्ठित्वा आयस्मन्तं उदायिं एतदवोच: “भण, समण, धम्मन्”ति।
Atha kho verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ pādukā ārohitvā ucce āsane nisīditvā sīsaṁ oguṇṭhitvā āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ etadavoca: “bhaṇa, samaṇa, dhamman”ti.
When Udāyī had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she put on a pair of shoes, sat on a high seat, covered her head, and said to him, “Ascetic, preach the Dhamma.”
“भविस्सति, भगिनि, समयो”ति वत्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कमि।
“Bhavissati, bhagini, samayo”ti vatvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkami.
“There will be an occasion for that, sister,” he replied, then got up from his seat and left.
दुतियम्पि खो सो माणवको येनायस्मा उदायी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता उदायिना सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो तं माणवकं आयस्मा उदायी धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेसि समादपेसि समुत्तेजेसि सम्पहंसेसि।
Dutiyampi kho so māṇavako yenāyasmā udāyī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā udāyinā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ māṇavakaṁ āyasmā udāyī dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi samādapesi samuttejesi sampahaṁsesi.
For a second time that student went to Venerable Udāyī …
दुतियम्पि खो सो माणवको आयस्मता उदायिना धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सितो समादपितो समुत्तेजितो सम्पहंसितो उट्ठायासना येन वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा वेरहच्चानिगोत्तं ब्राह्मणिं एतदवोच: “यग्घे, भोति, जानेय्यासि। समणो उदायी धम्मं देसेति आदिकल्याणं मज्झेकल्याणं परियोसानकल्याणं, सात्थं सब्यञ्जनं केवलपरिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं पकासेती”ति।
Dutiyampi kho so māṇavako āyasmatā udāyinā dhammiyā kathāya sandassito samādapito samuttejito sampahaṁsito uṭṭhāyāsanā yena verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā verahaccānigottaṁ brāhmaṇiṁ etadavoca: “yagghe, bhoti, jāneyyāsi. Samaṇo udāyī dhammaṁ deseti ādikalyāṇaṁ majjhekalyāṇaṁ pariyosānakalyāṇaṁ, sātthaṁ sabyañjanaṁ kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ pakāsetī”ti.
And for a second time that student went to the brahmin lady of the Verahaccāni clan …
“एवमेवं पन त्वं, माणवक, समणस्स उदायिस्स वण्णं भाससि। समणो पनुदायी ‘भण, समण, धम्मन्ऽति वुत्तो समानो ‘भविस्सति, भगिनि, समयोऽति वत्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कन्तो”ति।
“Evamevaṁ pana tvaṁ, māṇavaka, samaṇassa udāyissa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsasi. Samaṇo panudāyī ‘bhaṇa, samaṇa, dhamman’ti vutto samāno ‘bhavissati, bhagini, samayo’ti vatvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkanto”ti.
She said to him, “You keep praising the ascetic Udāyī like this. But when I asked him to preach the Dhamma he just said that there would be an occasion for that, and then he got up and left.”
“तथा हि पन त्वं, भोति, पादुका आरोहित्वा उच्चे आसने निसीदित्वा सीसं ओगुण्ठित्वा एतदवोच: ‘भण, समण, धम्मन्ऽति। धम्मगरुनो हि ते भवन्तो धम्मगारवा”ति।
“Tathā hi pana tvaṁ, bhoti, pādukā ārohitvā ucce āsane nisīditvā sīsaṁ oguṇṭhitvā etadavoca: ‘bhaṇa, samaṇa, dhamman’ti. Dhammagaruno hi te bhavanto dhammagāravā”ti.
“Madam, that’s because you put on a pair of shoes, sat on a high seat, and covered your head before inviting him to teach. For the masters respect the teaching.”
“तेन हि त्वं, माणवक, मम वचनेन समणं उदायिं निमन्तेहि स्वातनाय भत्तेना”ति।
“Tena hi tvaṁ, māṇavaka, mama vacanena samaṇaṁ udāyiṁ nimantehi svātanāya bhattenā”ti.
“Then, student, invite him in my name for tomorrow’s meal.”

अथ खो वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी आयस्मन्तं उदायिं भुत्ताविं ओनीतपत्तपाणिं पादुका ओरोहित्वा नीचे आसने निसीदित्वा सीसं विवरित्वा आयस्मन्तं उदायिं एतदवोच: “किस्मिं नु खो, भन्ते, सति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, किस्मिं असति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं न पञ्ञपेन्ती”ति?
Atha kho verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ pādukā orohitvā nīce āsane nisīditvā sīsaṁ vivaritvā āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ etadavoca: “kismiṁ nu kho, bhante, sati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ paññapenti, kismiṁ asati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ na paññapentī”ti?
When Udāyī had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she took off her shoes, sat on a low seat, uncovered her head, and said to him, “Sir, when what exists do the perfected ones declare that there is pleasure and pain? When what doesn’t exist do the perfected ones not declare that there is pleasure and pain?”
“चक्खुस्मिं खो, भगिनि, सति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, चक्खुस्मिं असति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं न पञ्ञपेन्ति …पे… जिव्हाय सति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, जिव्हाय असति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं न पञ्ञपेन्ति …पे…। मनस्मिं सति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं पञ्ञपेन्ति, मनस्मिं असति अरहन्तो सुखदुक्खं न पञ्ञपेन्ती”ति।
“Cakkhusmiṁ kho, bhagini, sati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ paññapenti, cakkhusmiṁ asati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ na paññapenti …pe… jivhāya sati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ paññapenti, jivhāya asati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ na paññapenti …pe…. Manasmiṁ sati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ paññapenti, manasmiṁ asati arahanto sukhadukkhaṁ na paññapentī”ti.
“Sister, when there’s an eye, the perfected ones declare that there is pleasure and pain. When there’s no eye, the perfected ones don’t declare that there is pleasure and pain. When there’s an ear … nose … tongue … body … mind, the perfected ones declare that there is pleasure and pain. When there’s no mind, the perfected ones don’t declare that there is pleasure and pain.”
एवं वुत्ते, वेरहच्चानिगोत्ता ब्राह्मणी आयस्मन्तं उदायिं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते, अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते। सेय्यथापि, भन्ते, निक्कुज्जितं वा उक्कुज्जेय्य, पटिच्छन्नं वा विवरेय्य, मूळ्हस्स वा मग्गं आचिक्खेय्य, अन्धकारे वा तेलपज्जोतं धारेय्य: ‘चक्खुमन्तो रूपानि दक्खन्तीऽति; एवमेवं अय्येन उदायिना अनेकपरियायेन धम्मो पकासितो। एसाहं, अय्य उदायि, तं भगवन्तं सरणं गच्छामि, धम्मञ्च, भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। उपासिकं मं अय्यो उदायी धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, verahaccānigottā brāhmaṇī āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bhante, abhikkantaṁ, bhante. Seyyathāpi, bhante, nikkujjitaṁ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṁ ayyena udāyinā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṁ, ayya udāyi, taṁ bhagavantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi, dhammañca, bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsikaṁ maṁ ayyo udāyī dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
When he said this, the brahmin lady said to Udāyī, “Excellent, sir! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Venerable Udāyī has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Venerable Udāyī remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

वेसाली वज्जि नाळन्दा, भारद्वाज सोणो च घोसितो; हालिद्दिको नकुलपिता, लोहिच्चो वेरहच्चानीति।
