एकं समयं आयस्मा आनन्दो कोसम्बियं विहरति घोसितारामे। अथ खो घोसितो गहपति येनायस्मा आनन्दो तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो घोसितो गहपति आयस्मन्तं आनन्दं एतदवोच:

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. Atha kho ghosito gahapati yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ghosito gahapati āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavoca:

At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then the householder Ghosita went up to Venerable Ānanda, and said to him:

“‘धातुनानत्तं, धातुनानत्तन्ऽति, भन्ते आनन्द, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, धातुनानत्तं वुत्तं भगवता”ति?

“‘dhātunānattaṁ, dhātunānattan’ti, bhante ānanda, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, dhātunānattaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā”ti?

“Honorable Ānanda, they speak of ‘the diversity of elements’. In what way did the Buddha speak of the diversity of elements?”

“संविज्जति खो, गहपति, चक्खुधातु, रूपा च मनापा, चक्खुविञ्ञाणञ्च सुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति सुखा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, चक्खुधातु, रूपा च अमनापा, चक्खुविञ्ञाणञ्च दुक्खवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति दुक्खा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, चक्खुधातु, रूपा च मनापा उपेक्खावेदनिया, चक्खुविञ्ञाणञ्च अदुक्खमसुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति अदुक्खमसुखा वेदना …पे…

“Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, cakkhudhātu, rūpā ca manāpā, cakkhuviññāṇañca sukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, cakkhudhātu, rūpā ca amanāpā, cakkhuviññāṇañca dukkhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati dukkhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, cakkhudhātu, rūpā ca manāpā upekkhāvedaniyā, cakkhuviññāṇañca adukkhamasukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati adukkhamasukhā vedanā …pe…

“Householder, the eye element is found, as are agreeable sights, and eye consciousness. Pleasant feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant. The eye element is found, as are disagreeable sights, and eye consciousness. Painful feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as painful. The eye element is found, as are sights that are a basis for equanimity, and eye consciousness. Neutral feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as neutral.

संविज्जति खो, गहपति, जिव्हाधातु, रसा च मनापा, जिव्हाविञ्ञाणञ्च सुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति सुखा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, जिव्हाधातु, रसा च अमनापा, जिव्हाविञ्ञाणञ्च दुक्खवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति दुक्खा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, जिव्हाधातु, रसा च उपेक्खावेदनिया, जिव्हाविञ्ञाणञ्च अदुक्खमसुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति अदुक्खमसुखा वेदना …पे… संविज्जति खो, गहपति, मनोधातु, धम्मा च मनापा, मनोविञ्ञाणञ्च सुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति सुखा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, मनोधातु, धम्मा च अमनापा, मनोविञ्ञाणञ्च दुक्खवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति दुक्खा वेदना। संविज्जति खो, गहपति, मनोधातु, धम्मा च उपेक्खावेदनिया, मनोविञ्ञाणञ्च अदुक्खमसुखवेदनियं। फस्सं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति अदुक्खमसुखा वेदना।

saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, jivhādhātu, rasā ca manāpā, jivhāviññāṇañca sukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, jivhādhātu, rasā ca amanāpā, jivhāviññāṇañca dukkhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati dukkhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, jivhādhātu, rasā ca upekkhāvedaniyā, jivhāviññāṇañca adukkhamasukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati adukkhamasukhā vedanā …pe… saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, manodhātu, dhammā ca manāpā, manoviññāṇañca sukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, manodhātu, dhammā ca amanāpā, manoviññāṇañca dukkhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati dukkhā vedanā. Saṁvijjati kho, gahapati, manodhātu, dhammā ca upekkhāvedaniyā, manoviññāṇañca adukkhamasukhavedaniyaṁ. Phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati adukkhamasukhā vedanā.

The ear … nose … tongue … body … mind element is found, as are agreeable thoughts, and mind consciousness. Pleasant feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant. The mind element is found, as are disagreeable thoughts, and mind consciousness. Painful feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as painful. The mind element is found, as are thoughts that are a basis for equanimity, and mind consciousness. Neutral feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as neutral.

एत्तावता खो, गहपति, धातुनानत्तं वुत्तं भगवता”ति।

Ettāvatā kho, gahapati, dhātunānattaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā”ti.

This is how the Buddha spoke of the diversity of elements.”
