एकं समयं आयस्मा पिण्डोलभारद्वाजो कोसम्बियं विहरति घोसितारामे। अथ खो राजा उदेनो येनायस्मा पिण्डोलभारद्वाजो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता पिण्डोलभारद्वाजेन सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो राजा उदेनो आयस्मन्तं पिण्डोलभारद्वाजं एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā piṇḍolabhāradvājo kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. Atha kho rājā udeno yenāyasmā piṇḍolabhāradvājo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā piṇḍolabhāradvājena saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā udeno āyasmantaṁ piṇḍolabhāradvājaṁ etadavoca:
At one time Venerable Bhāradvāja the Alms-gatherer was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then King Udena went up to Bhāradvāja the Alms-gatherer and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to him:
“को नु खो, भो भारद्वाज, हेतु को पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा भद्रेन योब्बनेन समन्नागता पठमेन वयसा अनिकीळिताविनो कामेसु यावजीवं परिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं चरन्ति, अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्ती”ति?
“ko nu kho, bho bhāradvāja, hetu ko paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū1 kāḷakesā bhadrena yobbanena samannāgatā paṭhamena vayasā anikīḷitāvino kāmesu yāvajīvaṁ paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ caranti, addhānañca āpādentī”ti?
“Master Bhāradvāja, there are these young monks who are youthful, black-haired, blessed with youth, in the prime of life; and they’ve never played around with sensual pleasures. What is the cause, what is the reason why they practice the full and pure spiritual life as long as they live, maintaining it for a long time?”
“वुत्तं खो एतं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन:
“Vuttaṁ kho etaṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena:
“Great king, this has been stated by the Blessed One, who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha:
‘एथ तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, मातुमत्तीसु मातुचित्तं उपट्ठपेथ, भगिनिमत्तीसु भगिनिचित्तं उपट्ठपेथ, धीतुमत्तीसु धीतुचित्तं उपट्ठपेथाऽति।
‘etha tumhe, bhikkhave, mātumattīsu mātucittaṁ upaṭṭhapetha, bhaginimattīsu bhaginicittaṁ upaṭṭhapetha, dhītumattīsu dhītucittaṁ upaṭṭhapethā’ti.
‘Please, monks, think of women your mother’s age as your mother. Think of women your sister’s age as your sister. And think of women your daughter’s age as your daughter.’
अयं खो, महाराज, हेतु, अयं पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा भद्रेन योब्बनेन समन्नागता पठमेन वयसा अनिकीळिताविनो कामेसु यावजीवं परिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं चरन्ति, अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्ती”ति।
Ayaṁ kho, mahārāja, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū kāḷakesā bhadrena yobbanena samannāgatā paṭhamena vayasā anikīḷitāvino kāmesu yāvajīvaṁ paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ caranti, addhānañca āpādentī”ti.
This is a cause, great king, this is a reason why these young monks practice the full and pure spiritual life as long as they live, maintaining it for a long time.”
“लोलं खो, भो भारद्वाज, चित्तं। अप्पेकदा मातुमत्तीसुपि लोभधम्मा उप्पज्जन्ति, भगिनिमत्तीसुपि लोभधम्मा उप्पज्जन्ति, धीतुमत्तीसुपि लोभधम्मा उप्पज्जन्ति। अत्थि नु खो, भो भारद्वाज, अञ्ञो च हेतु, अञ्ञो च पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा …पे… अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्ती”ति?
“Lolaṁ2 kho, bho bhāradvāja, cittaṁ. Appekadā mātumattīsupi lobhadhammā uppajjanti, bhaginimattīsupi lobhadhammā uppajjanti, dhītumattīsupi lobhadhammā uppajjanti. Atthi nu kho, bho bhāradvāja, añño ca hetu, añño ca paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū kāḷakesā …pe… addhānañca āpādentī”ti?
“But Master Bhāradvāja, the mind is wanton. Sometimes thoughts of desire come up even for women your mother’s age, your sister’s age, or your daughter’s age. Is there another cause, another reason why these young monks live the full and pure spiritual life for their entire life?”
“वुत्तं खो एतं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन:
“Vuttaṁ kho etaṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena:
“Great king, this has been stated by the Blessed One, who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha:
‘एथ तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, इममेव कायं उद्धं पादतला अधो केसमत्थका तचपरियन्तं पूरं नानप्पकारस्स असुचिनो पच्चवेक्खथ—अत्थि इमस्मिं काये केसा लोमा नखा दन्ता तचो मंसं न्हारु अट्ठि अट्ठिमिञ्जं वक्कं हदयं यकनं किलोमकं पिहकं पप्फासं अन्तं अन्तगुणं उदरियं करीसं पित्तं सेम्हं पुब्बो लोहितं सेदो मेदो अस्सु वसा खेळो सिङ्घाणिका लसिका मुत्तन्ऽति।
‘etha tumhe, bhikkhave, imameva kāyaṁ uddhaṁ pādatalā adho kesamatthakā tacapariyantaṁ pūraṁ nānappakārassa asucino paccavekkhatha—atthi imasmiṁ kāye kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco maṁsaṁ nhāru3 aṭṭhi aṭṭhimiñjaṁ4 vakkaṁ hadayaṁ yakanaṁ kilomakaṁ pihakaṁ papphāsaṁ antaṁ antaguṇaṁ udariyaṁ karīsaṁ pittaṁ semhaṁ pubbo lohitaṁ sedo medo assu vasā kheḷo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttan’ti.
‘Please, monks, examine your own body up from the soles of the feet and down from the tips of the hairs, wrapped in skin and full of many kinds of filth. In this body there is head hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, intestines, mesentery, undigested food, feces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, snot, synovial fluid, urine.’
अयम्पि खो, महाराज, हेतु, अयं पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा …पे… अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्ती”ति।
Ayampi kho, mahārāja, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū kāḷakesā …pe… addhānañca āpādentī”ti.
This is also a cause, great king, this is a reason why these young monks live the full and pure spiritual life for their entire life, maintaining it for a long time.”
“ये ते, भो भारद्वाज, भिक्खू भावितकाया भावितसीला भावितचित्ता भावितपञ्ञा, तेसं तं सुकरं होति। ये च खो ते, भो भारद्वाज, भिक्खू अभावितकाया अभावितसीला अभावितचित्ता अभावितपञ्ञा, तेसं तं दुक्करं होति। अप्पेकदा, भो भारद्वाज, असुभतो मनसि करिस्सामीति सुभतोव आगच्छति। अत्थि नु खो, भो भारद्वाज, अञ्ञो च खो हेतु अञ्ञो च पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा …पे… अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्ती”ति?
“Ye te, bho bhāradvāja, bhikkhū bhāvitakāyā bhāvitasīlā bhāvitacittā bhāvitapaññā, tesaṁ taṁ sukaraṁ hoti. Ye ca kho te, bho bhāradvāja, bhikkhū abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā, tesaṁ taṁ dukkaraṁ hoti. Appekadā, bho bhāradvāja, asubhato manasi karissāmīti5 subhatova āgacchati. Atthi nu kho, bho bhāradvāja, añño ca kho hetu añño ca paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū kāḷakesā …pe… addhānañca āpādentī”ti?
“This is easy to do for those bhikkhus who have developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom. But it’s hard to do for those bhikkhus who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom. Sometimes I plan to focus on something as ugly, but only its beauty comes to mind. Is there another cause, another reason why these young monks live the full and pure spiritual life for their entire life?”
“वुत्तं खो एतं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन:
“Vuttaṁ kho etaṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena:
“Great king, this has been stated by the Blessed One, who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha:
‘एथ तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारा विहरथ। चक्खुना रूपं दिस्वा मा निमित्तग्गाहिनो अहुवत्थ, मानुब्यञ्जनग्गाहिनो। यत्वाधिकरणमेनं चक्खुन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जथ। रक्खथ चक्खुन्द्रियं; चक्खुन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जथ। सोतेन सद्दं सुत्वा …पे… घानेन गन्धं घायित्वा … जिव्हाय रसं सायित्वा … कायेन फोट्ठब्बं फुसित्वा … मनसा धम्मं विञ्ञाय मा निमित्तग्गाहिनो अहुवत्थ, मानुब्यञ्जनग्गाहिनो। यत्वाधिकरणमेनं मनिन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जथ। रक्खथ मनिन्द्रियं; मनिन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जथाऽति।
‘etha tumhe, bhikkhave, indriyesu guttadvārā viharatha. Cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā mā nimittaggāhino ahuvattha, mānubyañjanaggāhino. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ cakkhundriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjatha. Rakkhatha cakkhundriyaṁ; cakkhundriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjatha. Sotena saddaṁ sutvā …pe… ghānena gandhaṁ ghāyitvā … jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā … kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusitvā … manasā dhammaṁ viññāya mā nimittaggāhino ahuvattha, mānubyañjanaggāhino. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ manindriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjatha. Rakkhatha manindriyaṁ; manindriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjathā’ti.
‘Please, monks, live with sense doors guarded. When you see a sight with your eyes, don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, practice restraint, protect the faculty of sight, and achieve its restraint. When you hear a sound with your ears … When you smell an odor with your nose … When you taste a flavor with your tongue … When you feel a touch with your body … When you know a thought with your mind, don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, practice restraint, protect the faculty of mind, and achieve its restraint.’

“अच्छरियं, भो भारद्वाज; अब्भुतं, भो भारद्वाज। याव सुभासितञ्चिदं, भो भारद्वाज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन। एसोव खो, भो भारद्वाज, हेतु, एस पच्चयो येनिमे दहरा भिक्खू सुसू काळकेसा भद्रेन योब्बनेन समन्नागता पठमेन वयसा अनिकीळिताविनो कामेसु यावजीवं परिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं चरन्ति, अद्धानञ्च आपादेन्तीति।
“Acchariyaṁ, bho bhāradvāja; abbhutaṁ, bho bhāradvāja. Yāva subhāsitañcidaṁ, bho bhāradvāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena. Esova kho, bho bhāradvāja, hetu, esa paccayo yenime daharā bhikkhū susū kāḷakesā bhadrena yobbanena samannāgatā paṭhamena vayasā anikīḷitāvino kāmesu yāvajīvaṁ paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ caranti, addhānañca āpādentīti.
“It’s incredible, Master Bhāradvāja, it’s amazing! How well this was said by the Buddha! This is the real cause, this is the reason why these young monks practice the full and pure spiritual life as long as they live, maintaining it for a long time.
अहम्पि खो, भो भारद्वाज, यस्मिं समये अरक्खितेनेव कायेन, अरक्खिताय वाचाय, अरक्खितेन चित्तेन, अनुपट्ठिताय सतिया, असंवुतेहि इन्द्रियेहि अन्तेपुरं पविसामि, अतिविय मं तस्मिं समये लोभधम्मा परिसहन्ति। यस्मिञ्च ख्वाहं, भो भारद्वाज, समये रक्खितेनेव कायेन, रक्खिताय वाचाय, रक्खितेन चित्तेन, उपट्ठिताय सतिया, संवुतेहि इन्द्रियेहि अन्तेपुरं पविसामि, न मं तथा तस्मिं समये लोभधम्मा परिसहन्ति।
Ahampi kho, bho6 bhāradvāja, yasmiṁ samaye arakkhiteneva kāyena, arakkhitāya vācāya, arakkhitena cittena, anupaṭṭhitāya satiyā, asaṁvutehi indriyehi antepuraṁ pavisāmi, ativiya maṁ tasmiṁ samaye lobhadhammā parisahanti. Yasmiñca khvāhaṁ, bho bhāradvāja, samaye rakkhiteneva kāyena, rakkhitāya vācāya, rakkhitena cittena, upaṭṭhitāya satiyā, saṁvutehi indriyehi antepuraṁ pavisāmi, na maṁ tathā tasmiṁ samaye lobhadhammā parisahanti.
For sometimes I too enter the harem with unprotected body, speech, mind, mindfulness, and sense faculties. At those times powerful thoughts of desire get the better of me. But sometimes I enter the harem with protected body, speech, mind, mindfulness, and sense faculties. At those times such thoughts of desire don’t get the better of me.
अभिक्कन्तं, भो भारद्वाज, अभिक्कन्तं, भो भारद्वाज। सेय्यथापि, भो भारद्वाज, निक्कुज्जितं वा उक्कुज्जेय्य, पटिच्छन्नं वा विवरेय्य, मूळ्हस्स वा मग्गं आचिक्खेय्य, अन्धकारे वा तेलपज्जोतं धारेय्य: ‘चक्खुमन्तो रूपानि दक्खन्तीऽति; एवमेवं भोता भारद्वाजेन अनेकपरियायेन धम्मो पकासितो। एसाहं, भो भारद्वाज, तं भगवन्तं सरणं गच्छामि, धम्मञ्च, भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। उपासकं मं भवं भारद्वाजो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
Abhikkantaṁ, bho bhāradvāja, abhikkantaṁ, bho bhāradvāja. Seyyathāpi, bho bhāradvāja, nikkujjitaṁ7 vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṁ bhotā bhāradvājena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṁ, bho bhāradvāja, taṁ bhagavantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi, dhammañca, bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ bhāradvājo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
Excellent, Master Bhāradvāja! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Master Bhāradvāja has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Master Bhāradvāja remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
