With Lohicca
एकं समयं आयस्मा महाकच्चानो अवन्तीसु विहरति मक्करकते अरञ्ञकुटिकायं।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā mahākaccāno avantīsu viharati makkarakate1 araññakuṭikāyaṁ.
At one time Venerable Mahākaccāna was staying in the land of the Avantis in a wilderness hut near Makkarakaṭa.
अथ खो लोहिच्चस्स ब्राह्मणस्स सम्बहुला अन्तेवासिका कट्ठहारका माणवका येनायस्मतो महाकच्चानस्स अरञ्ञकुटिका तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा परितो परितो कुटिकाय अनुचङ्कमन्ति अनुविचरन्ति उच्चासद्दा महासद्दा कानिचि कानिचि सेलेय्यकानि करोन्ति: “इमे पन मुण्डका समणका इब्भा कण्हा बन्धुपादापच्चा, इमेसं भरतकानं सक्कता गरुकता मानिता पूजिता अपचिता”ति।
Atha kho lohiccassa brāhmaṇassa sambahulā antevāsikā kaṭṭhahārakā māṇavakā yenāyasmato mahākaccānassa araññakuṭikā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā parito parito kuṭikāya anucaṅkamanti anuvicaranti uccāsaddā mahāsaddā kānici kānici seleyyakāni karonti: “ime pana muṇḍakā samaṇakā ibbhā kaṇhā2 bandhupādāpaccā, imesaṁ bharatakānaṁ sakkatā garukatā mānitā pūjitā apacitā”ti.
Then several youths, students of the brahmin Lohicca, approached Mahākaccāna’s wilderness hut while collecting firewood. They walked and wandered all around the hut, making a dreadful racket and all kinds of jeers: “These shavelings, fake ascetics, primitives, black spawn from the feet of our kinsman, the Lord! They’re honored, respected, revered, venerated, and esteemed by those who pretend to inherit Vedic culture.”
अथ खो आयस्मा महाकच्चानो विहारा निक्खमित्वा ते माणवके एतदवोच: “मा माणवका सद्दमकत्थ; धम्मं वो भासिस्सामी”ति।
Atha kho āyasmā mahākaccāno vihārā nikkhamitvā te māṇavake etadavoca: “mā māṇavakā saddamakattha; dhammaṁ vo bhāsissāmī”ti.
And then Mahākaccāna left his dwelling and said to those brahmin students, “Students, stop being so noisy. I will speak to you on the teaching.”
एवं वुत्ते, ते माणवका तुण्ही अहेसुं। अथ खो आयस्मा महाकच्चानो ते माणवके गाथाहि अज्झभासि:
Evaṁ vutte, te māṇavakā tuṇhī ahesuṁ. Atha kho āyasmā mahākaccāno te māṇavake gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
When this was said, the students fell silent. Then Mahākaccāna recited these verses for them.
“सीलुत्तमा पुब्बतरा अहेसुं, ते ब्राह्मणा ये पुराणं सरन्ति; गुत्तानि द्वारानि सुरक्खितानि, अहेसुं तेसं अभिभुय्य कोधं।
“Sīluttamā pubbatarā ahesuṁ, Te brāhmaṇā ye purāṇaṁ saranti; Guttāni dvārāni surakkhitāni, Ahesuṁ tesaṁ abhibhuyya kodhaṁ.
“The brahmins of old championed ethics and remembered the ancient traditions. Their sense doors were guarded, well protected, and they had mastered anger.
धम्मे च झाने च रता अहेसुं, ते ब्राह्मणा ये पुराणं सरन्ति।
Dhamme ca jhāne ca ratā ahesuṁ, Te brāhmaṇā ye purāṇaṁ saranti.
Those brahmins who remembered
इमे च वोक्कम्म जपामसेति, गोत्तेन मत्ता विसमं चरन्ति; कोधाभिभूता पुथुअत्तदण्डा, विरज्जमाना सतण्हातण्हेसु।
Ime ca vokkamma japāmaseti, Gottena mattā visamaṁ caranti; Kodhābhibhūtā puthuattadaṇḍā, Virajjamānā sataṇhātaṇhesu.
But these have lost their way. Claiming to recite, they live out of balance,
अगुत्तद्वारस्स भवन्ति मोघा, सुपिनेव लद्धं पुरिसस्स वित्तं; अनासका थण्डिलसायिका च, पातो सिनानञ्च तयो च वेदा।
Aguttadvārassa bhavanti moghā, Supineva laddhaṁ purisassa vittaṁ; Anāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā ca, Pāto sinānañca tayo ca vedā.
All is vain for someone
खराजिनं जटापङ्को, मन्ता सीलब्बतं तपो; कुहना वङ्कदण्डा च, उदकाचमनानि च; वण्णा एते ब्राह्मणानं, कता किञ्चिक्खभावना।
Kharājinaṁ jaṭāpaṅko, mantā sīlabbataṁ tapo; Kuhanā vaṅkadaṇḍā ca, udakācamanāni ca; Vaṇṇā ete brāhmaṇānaṁ, katā kiñcikkhabhāvanā.
rough hides, dreadlocks, and dirt, hymns, precepts and observances,
चित्तञ्च सुसमाहितं, विप्पसन्नमनाविलं; अखिलं सब्बभूतेसु, सो मग्गो ब्रह्मपत्तिया”ति।
Cittañca susamāhitaṁ, vippasannamanāvilaṁ; Akhilaṁ sabbabhūtesu, so maggo brahmapattiyā”ti.
A mind that’s serene, clear and undisturbed, kind to all creatures: that’s the path to attainment of Brahmā!”
अथ खो ते माणवका कुपिता अनत्तमना येन लोहिच्चो ब्राह्मणो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा लोहिच्चं ब्राह्मणं एतदवोचुं: “यग्घे भवं जानेय्य, समणो महाकच्चानो ब्राह्मणानं मन्ते एकंसेन अपवदति, पटिक्कोसती”ति?
Atha kho te māṇavakā kupitā anattamanā yena lohicco brāhmaṇo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā lohiccaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ etadavocuṁ: “yagghe bhavaṁ jāneyya, samaṇo mahākaccāno brāhmaṇānaṁ mante3 ekaṁsena apavadati, paṭikkosatī”ti?
Then those students, offended and upset, went to the brahmin Lohicca and said to him, “Please, master, you should know this. The ascetic Mahākaccāna condemns and rejects outright the hymns of the brahmins!”
एवं वुत्ते, लोहिच्चो ब्राह्मणो कुपितो अहोसि अनत्तमनो। अथ खो लोहिच्चस्स ब्राह्मणस्स एतदहोसि: “न खो पन मेतं पतिरूपं योहं अञ्ञदत्थु माणवकानंयेव सुत्वा समणं महाकच्चानं अक्कोसेय्यं परिभासेय्यं। यन्नूनाहं उपसङ्कमित्वा पुच्छेय्यन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, lohicco brāhmaṇo kupito ahosi anattamano. Atha kho lohiccassa brāhmaṇassa etadahosi: “na kho pana metaṁ patirūpaṁ yohaṁ aññadatthu māṇavakānaṁyeva sutvā samaṇaṁ mahākaccānaṁ akkoseyyaṁ4 paribhāseyyaṁ. Yannūnāhaṁ upasaṅkamitvā puccheyyan”ti.
When they said this, Lohicca was offended and upset. Then he thought, “But it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to abuse or insult the ascetic Mahākaccāna solely because of what I’ve heard from these students. Why don’t I go and ask him about it?”
अथ खो लोहिच्चो ब्राह्मणो तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं येनायस्मा महाकच्चानो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता महाकच्चानेन सद्धिं सम्मोदि।
Atha kho lohicco brāhmaṇo tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā mahākaccānena saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the brahmin Lohicca together with those students went to Venerable Mahākaccāna and exchanged greetings with him.
सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो लोहिच्चो ब्राह्मणो आयस्मन्तं महाकच्चानं एतदवोच: “आगमंसु नु ख्विध, भो कच्चान, अम्हाकं सम्बहुला अन्तेवासिका कट्ठहारका माणवका”ति?
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho lohicco brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṁ mahākaccānaṁ etadavoca: “āgamaṁsu nu khvidha, bho kaccāna, amhākaṁ sambahulā antevāsikā kaṭṭhahārakā māṇavakā”ti?
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him, “Master Kaccāna, did several young students of mine come by here collecting firewood?”
“आगमंसु ख्विध ते, ब्राह्मण, सम्बहुला अन्तेवासिका कट्ठहारका माणवका”ति।
“Āgamaṁsu khvidha te, brāhmaṇa, sambahulā antevāsikā kaṭṭhahārakā māṇavakā”ti.
“They did, brahmin.”
“अहु पन भोतो कच्चानस्स तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं कोचिदेव कथासल्लापो”ति?
“Ahu pana bhoto kaccānassa tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ kocideva kathāsallāpo”ti?
“But did you have some discussion with them?”
“अहु खो मे, ब्राह्मण, तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं कोचिदेव कथासल्लापो”ति।
“Ahu kho me, brāhmaṇa, tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ kocideva kathāsallāpo”ti.
“I did.”
“यथा कथं पन भोतो कच्चानस्स तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं अहोसि कथासल्लापो”ति?
“Yathā kathaṁ pana bhoto kaccānassa tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ ahosi kathāsallāpo”ti?
“But what kind of discussion did you have with them?”
“एवं खो मे, ब्राह्मण, तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं अहोसि कथासल्लापो:
“Evaṁ kho me, brāhmaṇa, tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ ahosi kathāsallāpo:
“This is the discussion I had with these students.” And he repeated the verses in full.
‘सीलुत्तमा पुब्बतरा अहेसुं, ते ब्राह्मणा ये पुराणं सरन्ति; …पे… अखिलं सब्बभूतेसु, सो मग्गो ब्रह्मपत्तियाऽति।
‘Sīluttamā pubbatarā ahesuṁ, Te brāhmaṇā ye purāṇaṁ saranti; …pe… Akhilaṁ sabbabhūtesu, So maggo brahmapattiyā’ti.
एवं खो मे, ब्राह्मण, तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं अहोसि कथासल्लापो”ति।
Evaṁ kho me, brāhmaṇa, tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ ahosi kathāsallāpo”ti.
“‘अगुत्तद्वारोऽति भवं कच्चानो आह। कित्तावता नु खो, भो कच्चान, अगुत्तद्वारो होती”ति?
“‘Aguttadvāro’ti5 bhavaṁ kaccāno āha. Kittāvatā nu kho, bho kaccāna, aguttadvāro hotī”ti?
“Master Kaccāna spoke of someone who doesn’t guard the sense doors. How do you define someone who doesn’t guard the sense doors?”
“इध, ब्राह्मण, एकच्चो चक्खुना रूपं दिस्वा पियरूपे रूपे अधिमुच्चति, अप्पियरूपे रूपे ब्यापज्जति, अनुपट्ठितकायस्सति च विहरति, परित्तचेतसो तञ्च चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति यत्थस्स ते उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा अपरिसेसा निरुज्झन्ति।
“Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā piyarūpe rūpe adhimuccati, appiyarūpe rūpe byāpajjati, anupaṭṭhitakāyassati ca6 viharati, parittacetaso tañca cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti yatthassa te uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.
“Brahmin, take someone who sees a sight with their eyes. If it’s pleasant they hold on to it, but if it’s unpleasant they dislike it. They live with mindfulness of the body unestablished and their heart restricted. And they don’t truly understand the freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom where those arisen bad, unskillful qualities cease without anything left over.
सोतेन सद्दं सुत्वा …
Sotena saddaṁ sutvā …
When they hear a sound with their ears …
घानेन गन्धं घायित्वा …
ghānena gandhaṁ ghāyitvā …
When they smell an odor with their nose …
जिव्हाय रसं सायित्वा …
jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā …
When they taste a flavor with their tongue …
कायेन फोट्ठब्बं फुसित्वा …
kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusitvā …
When they feel a touch with their body …
मनसा धम्मं विञ्ञाय पियरूपे धम्मे अधिमुच्चति, अप्पियरूपे च धम्मे ब्यापज्जति, अनुपट्ठितकायस्सति च विहरति, परित्तचेतसो तञ्च चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति यत्थस्स ते उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा अपरिसेसा निरुज्झन्ति।
manasā dhammaṁ viññāya piyarūpe dhamme adhimuccati, appiyarūpe ca dhamme byāpajjati, anupaṭṭhitakāyassati ca viharati, parittacetaso tañca cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti yatthassa te uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.
When they know a thought with their mind, if it’s pleasant they hold on to it, but if it’s unpleasant they dislike it. They live with mindfulness of the body unestablished and a limited heart. And they don’t truly understand the freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom where those arisen bad, unskillful qualities cease without anything left over.
एवं खो, ब्राह्मण, अगुत्तद्वारो होती”ति।
Evaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, aguttadvāro hotī”ti.
That’s how someone doesn’t guard the sense doors.”
“अच्छरियं, भो कच्चान, अब्भुतं, भो कच्चान। यावञ्चिदं भोता कच्चानेन अगुत्तद्वारोव समानो अगुत्तद्वारोति अक्खातो।
“Acchariyaṁ, bho kaccāna, abbhutaṁ, bho kaccāna. Yāvañcidaṁ bhotā kaccānena aguttadvārova samāno aguttadvāroti akkhāto.
“It’s incredible, Master Kaccāna, it’s amazing! How accurately you’ve explained someone whose sense doors are unguarded!
‘गुत्तद्वारोऽति भवं कच्चानो आह। कित्तावता नु खो, भो कच्चान, गुत्तद्वारो होती”ति?
‘Guttadvāro’ti bhavaṁ kaccāno āha. Kittāvatā nu kho, bho kaccāna, guttadvāro hotī”ti?
You also spoke of someone who does guard the sense doors. How do you define someone who does guard the sense doors?”
“इध, ब्राह्मण, भिक्खु चक्खुना रूपं दिस्वा पियरूपे रूपे नाधिमुच्चति, अप्पियरूपे रूपे न ब्यापज्जति, उपट्ठितकायस्सति च विहरति, अप्पमाणचेतसो तञ्च चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं यथाभूतं पजानाति यत्थस्स ते उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा अपरिसेसा निरुज्झन्ति।
“Idha, brāhmaṇa, bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā piyarūpe rūpe nādhimuccati, appiyarūpe rūpe na byāpajjati, upaṭṭhitakāyassati ca viharati, appamāṇacetaso tañca cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti yatthassa te uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.

मनसा धम्मं विञ्ञाय पियरूपे धम्मे नाधिमुच्चति, अप्पियरूपे धम्मे न ब्यापज्जति, उपट्ठितकायस्सति च विहरति, अप्पमाणचेतसो तञ्च चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं यथाभूतं पजानाति, यत्थस्स ते उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा अपरिसेसा निरुज्झन्ति।
manasā dhammaṁ viññāya piyarūpe dhamme nādhimuccati, appiyarūpe dhamme na byāpajjati, upaṭṭhitakāyassati ca viharati, appamāṇacetaso tañca cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, yatthassa te uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā aparisesā nirujjhanti.

एवं खो, ब्राह्मण, गुत्तद्वारो होती”ति।
Evaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, guttadvāro hotī”ti.
That’s how someone guards the sense doors.”
“अच्छरियं, भो कच्चान, अब्भुतं, भो कच्चान। यावञ्चिदं भोता कच्चानेन गुत्तद्वारोव समानो गुत्तद्वारोति अक्खातो। अभिक्कन्तं, भो कच्चान; अभिक्कन्तं, भो कच्चान। सेय्यथापि, भो कच्चान, निक्कुज्जितं वा उक्कुज्जेय्य, पटिच्छन्नं वा विवरेय्य, मूळ्हस्स वा मग्गं आचिक्खेय्य, अन्धकारे वा तेलपज्जोतं धारेय्य: ‘चक्खुमन्तो रूपानि दक्खन्तीऽति; एवमेवं भोता कच्चानेन अनेकपरियायेन धम्मो पकासितो। एसाहं, भो कच्चान, तं भगवन्तं सरणं गच्छामि, धम्मञ्च, भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। उपासकं मं भवं कच्चानो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतं।
“Acchariyaṁ, bho kaccāna, abbhutaṁ, bho kaccāna. Yāvañcidaṁ bhotā kaccānena guttadvārova samāno guttadvāroti akkhāto. Abhikkantaṁ, bho kaccāna; abhikkantaṁ, bho kaccāna. Seyyathāpi, bho kaccāna, nikkujjitaṁ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṁ bhotā kaccānena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṁ, bho kaccāna, taṁ bhagavantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi, dhammañca, bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ kaccāno dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gataṁ.
“It’s incredible, Master Kaccāna, it’s amazing! How accurately you’ve explained someone whose sense doors are guarded! Excellent, Master Kaccāna! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Master Kaccāna has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Master Kaccāna remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.
यथा च भवं कच्चानो मक्करकते उपासककुलानि उपसङ्कमति; एवमेव लोहिच्चकुलं उपसङ्कमतु। तत्थ ये माणवका वा माणविका वा भवन्तं कच्चानं अभिवादेस्सन्ति पच्चुट्ठिस्सन्ति आसनं वा उदकं वा दस्सन्ति, तेसं तं भविस्सति दीघरत्तं हिताय सुखाया”ति।
Yathā ca bhavaṁ kaccāno makkarakate upāsakakulāni upasaṅkamati; evameva lohiccakulaṁ upasaṅkamatu. Tattha ye māṇavakā vā māṇavikā vā bhavantaṁ kaccānaṁ abhivādessanti paccuṭṭhissanti āsanaṁ vā udakaṁ vā dassanti, tesaṁ taṁ bhavissati dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti.
Please come to my family just as you go to the families of the lay followers in Makkarakaṭa. The brahmin boys and girls there will bow to you, rise in your presence, and give you a seat and water. That will be for their lasting welfare and happiness.”
