Training (3rd)
“สาธิกมิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทิยฑฺฒสิกฺขาปทสตํ อนฺวทฺธมาสํ อุทฺเทสํ อาคจฺฉติ ยตฺถ อตฺตกามา กุลปุตฺตา สิกฺขนฺติฯ ติโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขา ยตฺเถตํ สพฺพํ สโมธานํ คจฺฉติฯ กตมา ติโสฺส? อธิสีลสิกฺขา, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขา, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขา—อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, ติโสฺส สิกฺขา ยตฺเถตํ สพฺพํ สโมธานํ คจฺฉติฯ
“Bhikkhus, each fortnight over a hundred and fifty training rules come up for recitation, in which gentlemen who love themselves train. These are all included in the three trainings. What three? The training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. These are the three trainings that include them all.
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีเลสุ ปริปูรการี โหติ สมาธิสฺมึ ปริปูรการี ปญฺญาย ปริปูรการีฯ โส ยานิ ตานิ ขุทฺทานุขุทฺทกานิ สิกฺขาปทานิ ตานิ อาปชฺชติปิ วุฏฺฐาติปิฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? น หิ เมตฺถ, ภิกฺขเว, อภพฺพตา วุตฺตาฯ ยานิ จ โข ตานิ สิกฺขาปทานิ อาทิพฺรหฺมจริยกานิ พฺรหฺมจริยสารุปฺปานิ ตตฺถ ธุวสีโล จ โหติ ฐิตสีโล จ, สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุฯ
Take the case of a bhikkhu who has fulfilled their ethics, samādhi, and wisdom. They break some lesser and minor training rules, but are restored. Why is that? Because I don’t say they’re incapable of that. But they’re constant and steady in their precepts regarding the training rules that are fundamental, befitting the spiritual path. They keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
โส อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา อนฺตราปรินิพฺพายี โหติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of the five lower fetters they’re extinguished between one life and the next.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา อุปหจฺจปรินิพฺพายี โหติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of the five lower fetters they’re extinguished upon landing.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา อสงฺขารปรินิพฺพายี โหติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of the five lower fetters they’re extinguished without extra effort.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา สสงฺขารปรินิพฺพายี โหติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of the five lower fetters they’re extinguished with extra effort.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา อุทฺธํโสโต โหติ อกนิฏฺฐคามีฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of the five lower fetters they head upstream, going to the Akaniṭṭha realm.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา, ราคโทสโมหานํ ตนุตฺตา สกทาคามี โหติ, สกิเทว อิมํ โลกํ อาคนฺตฺวา ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กโรติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, they’re a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา เอกพีชี โหติ, เอกํเยว มานุสกํ ภวํ นิพฺพตฺเตตฺวา ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กโรติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of three fetters, they’re a one-seeder. They will be reborn just one time in a human existence, then make an end of suffering.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา โกลงฺโกโล โหติ, เทฺว วา ตีณิ วา กุลานิ สนฺธาวิตฺวา สํสริตฺวา ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กโรติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of three fetters, they go from family to family. They will transmigrate between two or three families and then make an end of suffering.
ตํ วา ปน อนภิสมฺภวํ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌํ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา สตฺตกฺขตฺตุปรโม โหติ, สตฺตกฺขตฺตุปรมํ เทเว จ มนุเสฺส จ สนฺธาวิตฺวา สํสริตฺวา ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กโรติฯ
If they don’t penetrate so far, with the ending of three fetters, they have at most seven rebirths. They will transmigrate at most seven times among gods and humans and then make an end of suffering.
อิติ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปริปูรํ ปริปูรการี อาราเธติ ปเทสํ ปเทสการีฯ อวญฺฌานิ เตฺววาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขาปทานิ วทามี”ติฯ
So, bhikkhus, if you practice fully you succeed fully. If you practice partially you succeed partially. These training rules are not a waste, I say.”
