อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“สมฺมุขา เมตํ, ภนฺเต, ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ: ‘ภควโต, อานนฺท, สิขิสฺส อภิภู นาม สาวโก พฺรหฺมโลเก ฐิโต สหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปสี'ติฯ ภควา ปน, ภนฺเต, อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ กีวตกํ ปโหติ สเรน วิญฺญาเปตุนฺ”ติ?
“Sir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha: ‘Ānanda, the Buddha Sikhī had a disciple called Abhibhū. Standing in the Brahmā realm, he could make his voice heard throughout the galaxy.’ I wonder how far a Blessed One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha can make their voice heard?”
“สาวโก โส, อานนฺท, อปฺปเมยฺยา ตถาคตา”ติฯ
“He was a disciple, Ānanda. Realized Ones are immeasurable.”
ทุติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “สมฺมุขา เมตํ, ภนฺเต, ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ: ‘ภควโต, อานนฺท, สิขิสฺส อภิภู นาม สาวโก พฺรหฺมโลเก ฐิโต สหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปสี'ติฯ ภควา ปน, ภนฺเต, อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ กีวตกํ ปโหติ สเรน วิญฺญาเปตุนฺ”ติ? “สาวโก โส, อานนฺท, อปฺปเมยฺยา ตถาคตา”ติฯ
For a second time …
ตติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “สมฺมุขา เมตํ, ภนฺเต, ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ: ‘ภควโต, อานนฺท, สิขิสฺส อภิภู นาม สาวโก พฺรหฺมโลเก ฐิโต สหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปสี'ติฯ ภควา ปน, ภนฺเต, อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ กีวตกํ ปโหติ สเรน วิญฺญาเปตุนฺ”ติ?
For a third time, Ānanda said to the Buddha: “… I wonder how far a Blessed One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha can make their voice heard?”
“สุตา เต, อานนฺท, สหสฺสี จูฬนิกา โลกธาตู”ติ?
“Ānanda, have you heard of a thousandfold lesser world system, a galaxy?”
“เอตสฺส, ภควา, กาโล; เอตสฺส, สุคต, กาโล, ยํ ภควา ภาเสยฺยฯ ภควโต สุตฺวา ภิกฺขู ธาเรสฺสนฺตี”ติฯ
“Now is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One! Let the Buddha speak. The bhikkhus will listen and remember it.”
“เตนหานนฺท, สุณาหิ สาธุกํ มนสิ กโรหิ, ภาสิสฺสามี”ติฯ
“Well then, Ānanda, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ติ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสิฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Yes, sir,” Ānanda replied. The Buddha said this:
“ยาวตา, อานนฺท, จนฺทิมสูริยา ปริหรนฺติ, ทิสา ภนฺติ วิโรจนา, ตาว สหสฺสธา โลโกฯ ตสฺมึ สหสฺสธา โลเก สหสฺสํ จนฺทานํ, สหสฺสํ สูริยานํ, สหสฺสํ สิเนรุปพฺพตราชานํ, สหสฺสํ ชมฺพุทีปานํ, สหสฺสํ อปรโคยานานํ, สหสฺสํ อุตฺตรกุรูนํ, สหสฺสํ ปุพฺพวิเทหานํ, จตฺตาริ มหาสมุทฺทสหสฺสานิ, จตฺตาริ มหาราชสหสฺสานิ, สหสฺสํ จาตุมหาราชิกานํ, สหสฺสํ ตาวตึสานํ, สหสฺสํ ยามานํ, สหสฺสํ ตุสิตานํ, สหสฺสํ นิมฺมานรตีนํ, สหสฺสํ ปรนิมฺมิตวสวตฺตีนํ, สหสฺสํ พฺรหฺมโลกานํ—อยํ วุจฺจตานนฺท, สหสฺสี จูฬนิกา โลกธาตุฯ
“Ānanda, a galaxy extends a thousand times as far as the moon and sun revolve and the shining ones light up the quarters. In that galaxy there are a thousand moons, a thousand suns, a thousand Sinerus king of mountains, a thousand Indias, a thousand Western Continents, a thousand Northern Continents, a thousand Eastern Continents, four thousand oceans, four thousand Great Kings, a thousand realms of the Gods of the Four Great Kings, a thousand realms of the Gods of the Thirty-Three, of the Gods of Yama, of the Joyful Gods, of the Gods who Love to Create, of the Gods who Control the Creations of Others, and a thousand Brahmā realms. This is called a thousandfold lesser world system, a ‘galaxy’.
ยาวตานนฺท, สหสฺสี จูฬนิกา โลกธาตุ ตาว สหสฺสธา โลโกฯ อยํ วุจฺจตานนฺท, ทฺวิสหสฺสี มชฺฌิมิกา โลกธาตุฯ
A world system that extends for a thousand galaxies is called a millionfold middling world system, a ‘galactic cluster’.
ยาวตานนฺท, ทฺวิสหสฺสี มชฺฌิมิกา โลกธาตุ ตาว สหสฺสธา โลโกฯ อยํ วุจฺจตานนฺท, ติสหสฺสี มหาสหสฺสี โลกธาตุฯ
A world system that extends for a thousand galactic clusters is called a billionfold great world system, a ‘galactic supercluster’.
อากงฺขมาโน, อานนฺท, ตถาคโต ติสหสฺสิมหาสหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปยฺย, ยาวตา ปน อากงฺเขยฺยา”ติฯ
If he wished, Ānanda, a Realized One could make his voice heard throughout a galactic supercluster, or as far as he wants.”
“ยถา กถํ ปน, ภนฺเต, ภควา ติสหสฺสิมหาสหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปยฺย, ยาวตา ปน อากงฺเขยฺยา”ติ?
“But how would the Buddha make his voice heard so far?”
“อิธานนฺท, ตถาคโต ติสหสฺสิมหาสหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ โอภาเสน ผเรยฺยฯ ยทา เต สตฺตา ตํ อาโลกํ สญฺชาเนยฺยุํ, อถ ตถาคโต โฆสํ กเรยฺย สทฺทมนุสฺสาเวยฺยฯ เอวํ โข, อานนฺท, ตถาคโต ติสหสฺสิมหาสหสฺสิโลกธาตุํ สเรน วิญฺญาเปยฺย, ยาวตา ปน อากงฺเขยฺยา”ติฯ
“First, Ānanda, a Realized One would fill the galactic supercluster with light. When sentient beings saw the light, the Realized One would project his call so that they’d hear the sound. That’s how a Realized One could make his voice heard throughout a galactic supercluster, or as far as he wants.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อายสฺมนฺตํ อุทายึ เอตทโวจ: “ลาภา วต เม, สุลทฺธํ วต เม, ยสฺส เม สตฺถา เอวํมหิทฺธิโก เอวํมหานุภาโว”ติฯ
When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said, “I’m so fortunate, so very fortunate, to have a teacher with such power and might!”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, อายสฺมา อุทายี อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ เอตทโวจ: “กึ ตุเยฺหตฺถ, อาวุโส อานนฺท, ยทิ เต สตฺถา เอวํมหิทฺธิโก เอวํมหานุภาโว”ติ?
When he said this, Venerable Udāyī said to Venerable Ānanda, “What is it to you, Friend Ānanda, if your teacher has such power and might?”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, ภควา อายสฺมนฺตํ อุทายึ เอตทโวจ: “มา เหวํ, อุทายิ, มา เหวํ, อุทายิฯ สเจ, อุทายิ, อานนฺโท อวีตราโค กาลํ กเรยฺย, เตน จิตฺตปฺปสาเทน สตฺตกฺขตฺตุํ เทเวสุ เทวรชฺชํ กาเรยฺย, สตฺตกฺขตฺตุํ อิมสฺมึเยว ชมฺพุทีเป มหารชฺชํ กาเรยฺยฯ อปิ จ, อุทายิ, อานนฺโท ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม ปรินิพฺพายิสฺสตี”ติฯ
When he said this, the Buddha said to Venerable Udāyī, “Not so, Udāyī, not so! If Ānanda were to die while still not free of greed, he would rule as king of the gods for seven lifetimes, and as king of all India for seven lifetimes, because of the confidence of his heart. However, Ānanda will be extinguished in the present life.”
