อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“เย, อานนฺท, อนุกมฺเปยฺยาถ เย จ โสตพฺพํ มญฺเญยฺยุํ มิตฺตา วา อมจฺจา วา ญาตี วา สาโลหิตา วา เต โว, อานนฺท, ตีสุ ฐาเนสุ สมาทเปตพฺพา นิเวเสตพฺพา ปติฏฺฐาเปตพฺพาฯ กตเมสุ ตีสุ?
“Ānanda, those who you have sympathy for, and those worth listening to—friends and colleagues, relatives and family—should be encouraged, supported, and established in three things. What three?
พุทฺเธ อเวจฺจปฺปสาเท สมาทเปตพฺพา นิเวเสตพฺพา ปติฏฺฐาเปตพฺพา: ‘อิติปิ โส ภควา อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ วิชฺชาจรณสมฺปนฺโน สุคโต โลกวิทู อนุตฺตโร ปุริสทมฺมสารถิ สตฺถา เทวมนุสฺสานํ, พุทฺโธ ภควา'ติ,
Experiential confidence in the Buddha: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’
ธมฺเม อเวจฺจปฺปสาเท สมาทเปตพฺพา นิเวเสตพฺพา ปติฏฺฐาเปตพฺพา: ‘สฺวากฺขาโต ภควตา ธมฺโม สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก อกาลิโก เอหิปสฺสิโก โอปเนยฺยิโก ปจฺจตฺตํ เวทิตพฺโพ วิญฺญูหี'ติ,
Experiential confidence in the teaching: ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’
สงฺเฆ อเวจฺจปฺปสาเท สมาทเปตพฺพา นิเวเสตพฺพา ปติฏฺฐาเปตพฺพา: ‘สุปฺปฏิปนฺโน ภควโต สาวกสงฺโฆ อุชุปฺปฏิปนฺโน ภควโต สาวกสงฺโฆ ญายปฺปฏิปนฺโน ภควโต สาวกสงฺโฆ สามีจิปฺปฏิปนฺโน ภควโต สาวกสงฺโฆ, ยทิทํ จตฺตาริ ปุริสยุคานิ อฏฺฐ ปุริสปุคฺคลา เอส ภควโต สาวกสงฺโฆ อาหุเนโยฺย ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสา'ติฯ
Experiential confidence in the Saṅgha: ‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’
สิยา, อานนฺท, จตุนฺนํ มหาภูตานํ อญฺญถตฺตํ—ปถวีธาตุยา อาโปธาตุยา เตโชธาตุยา วาโยธาตุยา, น เตฺวว พุทฺเธ อเวจฺจปฺปสาเทน สมนฺนาคตสฺส อริยสาวกสฺส สิยา อญฺญถตฺตํ ตตฺริทํ อญฺญถตฺตํฯ โส วตานนฺท, พุทฺเธ อเวจฺจปฺปสาเทน สมนฺนาคโต อริยสาวโก นิรยํ วา ติรจฺฉานโยนึ วา เปตฺติวิสยํ วา อุปปชฺชิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
There might be change in the four primary elements—earth, water, air, and fire—but a noble disciple with experiential confidence in the Buddha would never change. In this context, ‘change’ means that such a noble disciple will be reborn in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm: this is quite impossible.
