Three Trainings (1st)
“ติโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขาฯ กตมา ติโสฺส? อธิสีลสิกฺขา, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขา, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาฯ
“Bhikkhus, these are the three trainings. What three? The training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิสีลสิกฺขา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ …เป… สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิสีลสิกฺขาฯ
And what is the training in the higher ethics? It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. This is called the training in the higher ethics.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วิวิจฺเจว กาเมหิ …เป… จตุตฺถํ ฌานํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาฯ
And what is the training in the higher mind? It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna … second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna. This is called the training in the higher mind.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาฯ อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, ติโสฺส สิกฺขา”ติฯ
And what is the training in the higher wisdom? They truly understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. This is called the training in the higher wisdom. These are the three trainings.”
