วชฺชิปุตฺตสุตฺต
The Vajji
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา เวสาลิยํ วิหรติ มหาวเน กูฏาคารสาลายํฯ อถ โข อญฺญตโร วชฺชิปุตฺตโก ภิกฺขุ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข โส วชฺชิปุตฺตโก ภิกฺขุ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then a certain Vajji monk went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“สาธิกมิทํ, ภนฺเต, ทิยฑฺฒสิกฺขาปทสตํ อนฺวทฺธมาสํ อุทฺเทสํ อาคจฺฉติฯ นาหํ, ภนฺเต, เอตฺถ สกฺโกมิ สิกฺขิตุนฺ”ติฯ
“Sir, each fortnight over a hundred and fifty training rules are recited. I’m not able to train in them.”
“สกฺขิสฺสสิ ปน ตฺวํ, ภิกฺขุ, ตีสุ สิกฺขาสุ สิกฺขิตุํ—อธิสีลสิกฺขาย, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาย อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขายา”ติ?
“But monk, are you able to train in three trainings: the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom?”
“สกฺโกมหํ, ภนฺเต, ตีสุ สิกฺขาสุ สิกฺขิตุํ—อธิสีลสิกฺขาย, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาย, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขายา”ติฯ
“I am, sir.”
“ตสฺมาติห ตฺวํ, ภิกฺขุ, ตีสุ สิกฺขาสุ สิกฺขสฺสุ—อธิสีลสิกฺขาย, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาย, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขายฯ
“So, monk, you should train in these three trainings: the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.
ยโต โข ตฺวํ, ภิกฺขุ, อธิสีลมฺปิ สิกฺขิสฺสสิ, อธิจิตฺตมฺปิ สิกฺขิสฺสสิ, อธิปญฺญมฺปิ สิกฺขิสฺสสิ, ตสฺส ตุยฺหํ ภิกฺขุ อธิสีลมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิจิตฺตมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิปญฺญมฺปิ สิกฺขโต ราโค ปหียิสฺสติ, โทโส ปหียิสฺสติ, โมโห ปหียิสฺสติฯ โส ตฺวํ ราคสฺส ปหานา โทสสฺส ปหานา โมหสฺส ปหานา ยํ อกุสลํ น ตํ กริสฺสสิ, ยํ ปาปํ น ตํ เสวิสฺสสี”ติฯ
As you train in these, you will give up greed, hate, and delusion. Then you won’t do anything unskillful, or practice anything bad.”
อถ โข โส ภิกฺขุ อปเรน สมเยน อธิสีลมฺปิ สิกฺขิ, อธิจิตฺตมฺปิ สิกฺขิ, อธิปญฺญมฺปิ สิกฺขิฯ ตสฺส อธิสีลมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิจิตฺตมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิปญฺญมฺปิ สิกฺขโต ราโค ปหียิ, โทโส ปหียิ, โมโห ปหียิฯ โส ราคสฺส ปหานา โทสสฺส ปหานา โมหสฺส ปหานา ยํ อกุสลํ ตํ นากาสิ, ยํ ปาปํ ตํ น เสวีติฯ
After some time that monk trained in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. He gave up greed, hate, and delusion. Then he didn’t do anything unskillful, or practice anything bad.
