“ตีณิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส ปุพฺเพ กรณียานิฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, กสฺสโก คหปติ ปฏิกจฺเจว เขตฺตํ สุกฏฺฐํ กโรติ สุมติกตํฯ ปฏิกจฺเจว เขตฺตํ สุกฏฺฐํ กริตฺวา สุมติกตํ กาเลน พีชานิ ปติฏฺฐาเปติฯ กาเลน พีชานิ ปติฏฺฐาเปตฺวา สมเยน อุทกํ อภิเนติปิ อปเนติปิฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส ปุพฺเพ กรณียานิฯ
“Bhikkhus, a farmer has three primary duties. What three? A farmer first of all makes sure the field is well ploughed and tilled. Next they plant seeds in season. When the time is right, they irrigate the field and then drain it. These are the three primary duties of a farmer.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิมานิ ภิกฺขุสฺส ปุพฺเพ กรณียานิฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ? อธิสีลสิกฺขาสมาทานํ, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาสมาทานํ, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาสมาทานํ—อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ ภิกฺขุสฺส ปุพฺเพ กรณียานิฯ
In the same way, a bhikkhu has three primary duties. What three? Undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. These are the three primary duties of a bhikkhu.
ตสฺมาติห, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ สิกฺขิตพฺพํ: ‘ติพฺโพ โน ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิสีลสิกฺขาสมาทาเน, ติพฺโพ โน ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาสมาทาเน, ติพฺโพ โน ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาสมาทาเน'ติฯ เอวญฺหิ โว, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขิตพฺพนฺ”ติฯ
So you should train like this: ‘We will have keen enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”
