ตณฺหุปฺปาทสุตฺต
The Arising of Craving
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ตณฺหุปฺปาทา ยตฺถ ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร? จีวรเหตุ วา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชติ; ปิณฺฑปาตเหตุ วา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชติ; เสนาสนเหตุ วา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชติ; อิติภวาภวเหตุ วา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are four things that give rise to craving in a bhikkhu. What four? For the sake of robes, almsfood, lodgings, or rebirth in this or that state.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร ตณฺหุปฺปาทา ยตฺถ ภิกฺขุโน ตณฺหา อุปฺปชฺชมานา อุปฺปชฺชตีติฯ
These are the four things that give rise to craving in a bhikkhu.
ตณฺหา ทุติโย ปุริโส, ทีฆมทฺธาน สํสรํ; อิตฺถภาวญฺญถาภาวํ, สํสารํ นาติวตฺตติฯ
Craving is a person’s partner as they transmigrate on this long journey. They go from this state to another, but don’t escape transmigration.
เอวมาทีนวํ ญตฺวา, ตณฺหํ ทุกฺขสฺส สมฺภวํ; วีตตโณฺห อนาทาโน, สโต ภิกฺขุ ปริพฺพเช”ติฯ
Knowing this drawback—that craving is the cause of suffering—rid of craving, free of grasping, a bhikkhu would wander mindful.”
