1. At Wares Village
อนุพุทฺธสุตฺต
Understood
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา วชฺชีสุ วิหรติ ภณฺฑคาเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis at Wares Village. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“จตุนฺนํ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมานํ อนนุโพธา อปฺปฏิเวธา เอวมิทํ ทีฆมทฺธานํ สนฺธาวิตํ สํสริตํ มมญฺเจว ตุมฺหากญฺจฯ กตเมสํ จตุนฺนํ? อริยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, สีลสฺส อนนุโพธา อปฺปฏิเวธา เอวมิทํ ทีฆมทฺธานํ สนฺธาวิตํ สํสริตํ มมญฺเจว ตุมฺหากญฺจฯ อริยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, สมาธิสฺส อนนุโพธา อปฺปฏิเวธา เอวมิทํ ทีฆมทฺธานํ สนฺธาวิตํ สํสริตํ มมญฺเจว ตุมฺหากญฺจฯ อริยาย, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺญาย อนนุโพธา อปฺปฏิเวธา เอวมิทํ ทีฆมทฺธานํ สนฺธาวิตํ สํสริตํ มมญฺเจว ตุมฺหากญฺจฯ อริยาย, ภิกฺขเว, วิมุตฺติยา อนนุโพธา อปฺปฏิเวธา เอวมิทํ ทีฆมทฺธานํ สนฺธาวิตํ สํสริตํ มมญฺเจว ตุมฺหากญฺจฯ ตยิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, อริยํ สีลํ อนุพุทฺธํ ปฏิวิทฺธํ, อริโย สมาธิ อนุพุทฺโธ ปฏิวิทฺโธ, อริยา ปญฺญา อนุพุทฺธา ปฏิวิทฺธา, อริยา วิมุตฺติ อนุพุทฺธา ปฏิวิทฺธา, อุจฺฉินฺนา ภวตณฺหา, ขีณา ภวเนตฺติ, นตฺถิ ทานิ ปุนพฺภโว”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, due to not understanding and not penetrating four things, both you and I have wandered and transmigrated for such a very long time. What four? Noble ethics, samādhi, wisdom, and freedom. These noble ethics, samādhi, wisdom, and freedom have been understood and comprehended. Craving for continued existence has been cut off; the conduit to rebirth is ended; now there’ll be no more future lives.”
อิทมโวจ ภควาฯ อิทํ วตฺวาน สุคโต อถาปรํ เอตทโวจ สตฺถา:
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“สีลํ สมาธิ ปญฺญา จ, วิมุตฺติ จ อนุตฺตรา; อนุพุทฺธา อิเม ธมฺมา, โคตเมน ยสสฺสินาฯ
“Ethics, samādhi, and wisdom, and the supreme freedom: these things have been understood by Gotama the renowned.
อิติ พุทฺโธ อภิญฺญาย, ธมฺมมกฺขาสิ ภิกฺขุนํ; ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตกโร สตฺถา, จกฺขุมา ปรินิพฺพุโต”ติฯ
And so the Buddha, having insight, explained this teaching to the bhikkhus. The teacher made an end of suffering, seeing clearly, he is extinguished.”
