Beautification
“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อาวาสิโก ภิกฺขุ อาวาสํ โสเภติฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ?
“Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities beautifies the monastery. What five?
สีลวา โหติ …เป… สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุ;
They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
พหุสฺสุโต โหติ …เป… ทิฏฺฐิยา สุปฺปฏิวิทฺธา;
They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
กลฺยาณวาโจ โหติ กลฺยาณวากฺกรโณ โปริยา วาจาย สมนฺนาคโต วิสฺสฏฺฐาย อเนลคลาย อตฺถสฺส วิญฺญาปนิยา;
They’re a good speaker, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.
ปฏิพโล โหติ อุปสงฺกมนฺเต ธมฺมิยา กถาย สนฺทเสฺสตุํ สมาทเปตุํ สมุตฺเตเชตุํ สมฺปหํเสตุํ;
They’re able to educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire those who approach them with a Dhamma talk.
จตุนฺนํ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภีฯ
They get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อาวาสิโก ภิกฺขุ อาวาสํ โสเภตี”ติฯ
A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities beautifies the monastery.”
