“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อาวาสิโก ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ?
“Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired. What five?
สีลวา โหติ, ปาติโมกฺขสํวรสํวุโต วิหรติ อาจารโคจรสมฺปนฺโน อณุมตฺเตสุ วชฺเชสุ ภยทสฺสาวี, สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุ;
They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
พหุสฺสุโต โหติ สุตธโร สุตสนฺนิจโย, เย เต ธมฺมา อาทิกลฺยาณา มชฺเฌกลฺยาณา ปริโยสานกลฺยาณา สาตฺถํ สพฺยญฺชนํ เกวลปริปุณฺณํ ปริสุทฺธํ พฺรหฺมจริยํ อภิวทนฺติ, ตถารูปาสฺส ธมฺมา พหุสฺสุตา โหนฺติ ธาตา วจสา ปริจิตา มนสานุเปกฺขิตา ทิฏฺฐิยา สุปฺปฏิวิทฺธา;
They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reinforcing them by recitation, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
กลฺยาณวาโจ โหติ กลฺยาณวากฺกรโณ โปริยา วาจาย สมนฺนาคโต วิสฺสฏฺฐาย อเนลคลาย อตฺถสฺส วิญฺญาปนิยา;
They’re a good speaker, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.
จตุนฺนํ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี;
They get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อาวาสิโก ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จา”ติฯ
A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired.”
