Fetters
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร? สมณมจโล, สมณปุณฺฑรีโก, สมณปทุโม, สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโลฯ
“Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four? The confirmed ascetic, the white lotus ascetic, the pink lotus ascetic, and the exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณมจโล โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา โสตาปนฺโน โหติ อวินิปาตธมฺโม นิยโต สมฺโพธิปรายโณฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณมจโล โหติฯ
And how is a person a confirmed ascetic? It’s when a bhikkhu—with the ending of three fetters—is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening. That’s how a person is a confirmed ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปุณฺฑรีโก โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ติณฺณํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา, ราคโทสโมหานํ ตนุตฺตา สกทาคามี โหติ, สกิเทว อิมํ โลกํ อาคนฺตฺวา ทุกฺขสฺสนฺตํ กโรติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปุณฺฑรีโก โหติฯ
And how is a person a white lotus ascetic? It’s when a bhikkhu—with the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion—is a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering. That’s how a person is a white lotus ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปทุโม โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา โอปปาติโก โหติ ตตฺถ ปรินิพฺพายี อนาวตฺติธมฺโม ตสฺมา โลกาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปทุโม โหติฯ
And how is a person a pink lotus ascetic? It’s when a bhikkhu—with the ending of the five lower fetters—is reborn spontaneously. They’re extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world. That’s how a person is a pink lotus ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโล โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโล โหติฯ
And how is a person an exquisite ascetic of ascetics? It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. That’s how a person is an exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the four people found in the world.”
