A Religious Donation
“จตโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา วิสุทฺธิโยฯ กตมา จตโสฺส? อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโต; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ปฏิคฺคาหกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ทายกโต; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา เนว ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโต; อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ทายกโต เจว วิสุชฺฌติ ปฏิคฺคาหกโต จฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of purifying a religious donation. What four? There’s a religious donation that’s purified by the giver, not the recipient. There’s a religious donation that’s purified by the recipient, not the giver. There’s a religious donation that’s purified by neither the giver nor the recipient. There’s a religious donation that’s purified by both the giver and the recipient.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโต? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ทายโก โหติ สีลวา กลฺยาณธมฺโม; ปฏิคฺคาหกา โหนฺติ ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโตฯ
And how is a religious donation purified by the giver, not the recipient? It’s when the giver is ethical, of good character, but the recipient is unethical, of bad character.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ปฏิคฺคาหกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ทายกโต? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ทายโก โหติ ทุสฺสีโล ปาปธมฺโม; ปฏิคฺคาหกา โหนฺติ สีลวนฺโต กลฺยาณธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา ปฏิคฺคาหกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ทายกโตฯ
And how is a religious donation purified by the recipient, not the giver? It’s when the giver is unethical, of bad character, but the recipient is ethical, of good character.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา เนว ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโต? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ทายโก โหติ ทุสฺสีโล ปาปธมฺโม; ปฏิคฺคาหกาปิ โหนฺติ ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณา เนว ทายกโต วิสุชฺฌติ, โน ปฏิคฺคาหกโตฯ
And how is a religious donation purified by neither the giver nor the recipient? It’s when both the giver and the recipient are unethical, of bad character.

And how is a religious donation purified by both the giver and the recipient? It’s when both the giver and the recipient are ethical, of good character.
อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตโสฺส ทกฺขิณา วิสุทฺธิโย”ติฯ
These are the four ways of purifying a religious donation.”
