กุสินารสุตฺต
At Kusinārā
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา กุสินารายํ วิหรติ อุปวตฺตเน มลฺลานํ สาลวเน อนฺตเรน ยมกสาลานํ ปรินิพฺพานสมเยฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying between a pair of sal trees in the sal forest of the Mallas at Upavattana near Kusinārā at the time of his final Nibbana. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“สิยา โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกภิกฺขุสฺสปิ กงฺขา วา วิมติ วา พุทฺเธ วา ธมฺเม วา สงฺเฆ วา มคฺเค วา ปฏิปทาย วา, ปุจฺฉถ, ภิกฺขเว, มา ปจฺฉา วิปฺปฏิสาริโน อหุวตฺถ: ‘สมฺมุขีภูโต โน สตฺถา อโหสิ, นาสกฺขิมฺห ภควนฺตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิปุจฺฉิตุนฺ'”ติฯ เอวํ วุตฺเต, เต ภิกฺขู ตุณฺหี อเหสุํฯ
“Perhaps even a single bhikkhu has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the path, or the practice. So ask, bhikkhus! Don’t regret it later, thinking: ‘We were in the Teacher’s presence and we weren’t able to ask the Buddha a question.’” When this was said, the bhikkhus kept silent.
ทุติยมฺปิ โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “สิยา โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกภิกฺขุสฺสปิ กงฺขา วา วิมติ วา พุทฺเธ วา ธมฺเม วา สงฺเฆ วา มคฺเค วา ปฏิปทาย วา, ปุจฺฉถ, ภิกฺขเว, มา ปจฺฉา วิปฺปฏิสาริโน อหุวตฺถ: ‘สมฺมุขีภูโต โน สตฺถา อโหสิ, นาสกฺขิมฺห ภควนฺตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิปุจฺฉิตุนฺ'”ติฯ ทุติยมฺปิ โข เต ภิกฺขู ตุณฺหี อเหสุํฯ
For a second time the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus: … For a second time, the bhikkhus kept silent.
ตติยมฺปิ โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “สิยา โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกภิกฺขุสฺสปิ กงฺขา วา วิมติ วา พุทฺเธ วา ธมฺเม วา สงฺเฆ วา มคฺเค วา ปฏิปทาย วา, ปุจฺฉถ, ภิกฺขเว, มา ปจฺฉา วิปฺปฏิสาริโน อหุวตฺถ: ‘สมฺมุขีภูโต โน สตฺถา อโหสิ, นาสกฺขิมฺห ภควนฺตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิปุจฺฉิตุนฺ'”ติฯ ตติยมฺปิ โข เต ภิกฺขู ตุณฺหี อเหสุํฯ
For a third time the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus: … For a third time, the bhikkhus kept silent.
อถ โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ:
Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus:
“สิยา โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺถุคารเวนปิ น ปุจฺเฉยฺยาถ, สหายโกปิ, ภิกฺขเว, สหายกสฺส อาโรเจตู”ติฯ เอวํ วุตฺเต, เต ภิกฺขู ตุณฺหี อเหสุํฯ อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
“Bhikkhus, perhaps you don’t ask out of respect for the Teacher. So let a friend tell a friend.” When this was said, the bhikkhus kept silent. Then Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha:
“อจฺฉริยํ, ภนฺเต, อพฺภุตํ, ภนฺเตฯ เอวํ ปสนฺโน อหํ, ภนฺเตฯ นตฺถิ อิมสฺมึ ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆ เอกภิกฺขุสฺสปิ กงฺขา วา วิมติ วา พุทฺเธ วา ธมฺเม วา สงฺเฆ วา มคฺเค วา ปฏิปทาย วา”ติฯ
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! I am quite confident that there’s not even a single bhikkhu in this Saṅgha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the path, or the practice.”
“ปสาทา โข ตฺวํ, อานนฺท, วเทสิฯ ญาณเมว เหตฺถ, อานนฺท, ตถาคตสฺส: ‘นตฺถิ อิมสฺมึ ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆ เอกภิกฺขุสฺสปิ กงฺขา วา วิมติ วา พุทฺเธ วา ธมฺเม วา สงฺเฆ วา มคฺเค วา ปฏิปทาย วา'ฯ อิเมสญฺหิ, อานนฺท, ปญฺจนฺนํ ภิกฺขุสตานํ โย ปจฺฉิมโก ภิกฺขุ โส โสตาปนฺโน อวินิปาตธมฺโม นิยโต สมฺโพธิปรายโณ”ติฯ
“Ānanda, you speak from faith. But the Realized One knows that there’s not even a single bhikkhu in this Saṅgha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the path, or the practice. Even the last of these five hundred bhikkhus is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.”
