“ยสฺมึ, ภิกฺขเว, สมเย ราชาโน อธมฺมิกา โหนฺติ, ราชายุตฺตาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย อธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ ราชายุตฺเตสุ อธมฺมิเกสุ พฺราหฺมณคหปติกาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย อธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ พฺราหฺมณคหปติเกสุ อธมฺมิเกสุ เนคมชานปทาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย อธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ เนคมชานปเทสุ อธมฺมิเกสุ วิสมํ จนฺทิมสูริยา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ วิสมํ จนฺทิมสูริเยสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ วิสมํ นกฺขตฺตานิ ตารกรูปานิ ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ วิสมํ นกฺขตฺเตสุ ตารกรูเปสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ วิสมํ รตฺตินฺทิวา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ วิสมํ รตฺตินฺทิเวสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ วิสมํ มาสทฺธมาสา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ วิสมํ มาสทฺธมาเสสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ วิสมํ อุตุสํวจฺฉรา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ วิสมํ อุตุสํวจฺฉเรสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ วิสมํ วาตา วายนฺติ วิสมา อปญฺชสาฯ วิสมํ วาเตสุ วายนฺเตสุ วิสเมสุ อปญฺชเสสุ เทวตา ปริกุปิตา ภวนฺติฯ เทวตาสุ ปริกุปิตาสุ เทโว น สมฺมา ธารํ อนุปฺปเวจฺฉติฯ เทเว น สมฺมา ธารํ อนุปฺปเวจฺฉนฺเต วิสมปากานิ สสฺสานิ ภวนฺติฯ วิสมปากานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สสฺสานิ มนุสฺสา ปริภุญฺชนฺตา อปฺปายุกา โหนฺติ ทุพฺพณฺณา จ พวฺหาพาธา จฯ
“At a time when kings are unprincipled, royal officials become unprincipled. When royal officials are unprincipled, brahmins and householders become unprincipled. When brahmins and householders are unprincipled, the people of town and country become unprincipled. When the people of town and country are unprincipled, the courses of the moon and sun become erratic. … the courses of the stars and constellations … the days and nights … the months and fortnights … the seasons and years become erratic. … the blowing of the winds becomes erratic and chaotic. … the deities are angered. … the heavens don’t provide enough rain. … the crops ripen erratically. When people eat crops that have ripened erratically, they become short-lived, ugly, weak, and sickly.
ยสฺมึ, ภิกฺขเว, สมเย ราชาโน ธมฺมิกา โหนฺติ, ราชายุตฺตาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย ธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ ราชายุตฺเตสุ ธมฺมิเกสุ พฺราหฺมณคหปติกาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย ธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ พฺราหฺมณคหปติเกสุ ธมฺมิเกสุ เนคมชานปทาปิ ตสฺมึ สมเย ธมฺมิกา โหนฺติฯ เนคมชานปเทสุ ธมฺมิเกสุ สมํ จนฺทิมสูริยา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ สมํ จนฺทิมสูริเยสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ สมํ นกฺขตฺตานิ ตารกรูปานิ ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ สมํ นกฺขตฺเตสุ ตารกรูเปสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ สมํ รตฺตินฺทิวา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ สมํ รตฺตินฺทิเวสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ สมํ มาสทฺธมาสา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ สมํ มาสทฺธมาเสสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ สมํ อุตุสํวจฺฉรา ปริวตฺตนฺติฯ สมํ อุตุสํวจฺฉเรสุ ปริวตฺตนฺเตสุ สมํ วาตา วายนฺติ สมา ปญฺชสาฯ สมํ วาเตสุ วายนฺเตสุ สเมสุ ปญฺชเสสุ เทวตา อปริกุปิตา ภวนฺติฯ เทวตาสุ อปริกุปิตาสุ เทโว สมฺมา ธารํ อนุปฺปเวจฺฉติฯ เทเว สมฺมา ธารํ อนุปฺปเวจฺฉนฺเต สมปากานิ สสฺสานิ ภวนฺติฯ สมปากานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สสฺสานิ มนุสฺสา ปริภุญฺชนฺตา ทีฆายุกา จ โหนฺติ วณฺณวนฺโต จ พลวนฺโต จ อปฺปาพาธา จาติฯ
At a time when kings are principled, royal officials become principled. … brahmins and householders … people of town and country become principled. When the people of town and country are principled, the courses of the sun and moon become regular. … the stars and constellations … the days and nights … the months and fortnights … the seasons and years become regular. … the blowing of the winds becomes regular and orderly. … the deities are not angered … … the heavens provide plenty of rain. When the heavens provide plenty of rain, the crops ripen well. When people eat crops that have ripened well, they become long-lived, beautiful, strong, and healthy.
คุนฺนญฺเจ ตรมานานํ, ชิมฺหํ คจฺฉติ ปุงฺคโว; สพฺพา ตา ชิมฺหํ คจฺฉนฺติ, เนตฺเต ชิมฺหํ คเต สติฯ
When cattle ford a river, if the bull goes off course, they all go off course, because their leader is off course.
เอวเมวํ มนุเสฺสสุ, โย โหติ เสฏฺฐสมฺมโต; โส เจ อธมฺมํ จรติ, ปเคว อิตรา ปชา; สพฺพํ รฏฺฐํ ทุกฺขํ เสติ, ราชา เจ โหติ อธมฺมิโกฯ
So it is for humans: when the one deemed chief behaves badly, what do you expect the rest to do? The whole country sleeps badly, when the king is unprincipled.
คุนฺนญฺเจ ตรมานานํ, อุชุํ คจฺฉติ ปุงฺคโว; สพฺพา ตา อุชุํ คจฺฉนฺติ, เนตฺเต อุชุํ คเต สติฯ
