อานณฺยสุตฺต
Debtlessness
อถ โข อนาถปิณฺฑิโก คหปติ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อนาถปิณฺฑิกํ คหปตึ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“จตฺตาริมานิ, คหปติ, สุขานิ อธิคมนียานิ คิหินา กามโภคินา กาเลน กาลํ สมเยน สมยํ อุปาทายฯ กตมานิ จตฺตาริ? อตฺถิสุขํ, โภคสุขํ, อานณฺยสุขํ, อนวชฺชสุขํฯ
“Householder, these four kinds of happiness can be earned by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, depending on time and occasion. What four? The happiness of ownership, using wealth, debtlessness, and blamelessness.
กตมญฺจ, คหปติ, อตฺถิสุขํ? อิธ, คหปติ, กุลปุตฺตสฺส โภคา โหนฺติ อุฏฺฐานวีริยาธิคตา พาหาพลปริจิตา เสทาวกฺขิตฺตา ธมฺมิกา ธมฺมลทฺธาฯ โส ‘โภคา เม อตฺถิ อุฏฺฐานวีริยาธิคตา พาหาพลปริจิตา เสทาวกฺขิตฺตา ธมฺมิกา ธมฺมลทฺธา'ติ อธิคจฺฉติ สุขํ, อธิคจฺฉติ โสมนสฺสํฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, คหปติ, อตฺถิสุขํฯ
And what is the happiness of ownership? It’s when a gentleman owns legitimate wealth that he has earned by his own efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of ownership’.
กตมญฺจ, คหปติ, โภคสุขํ? อิธ, คหปติ, กุลปุตฺโต อุฏฺฐานวีริยาธิคเตหิ โภเคหิ พาหาพลปริจิเตหิ เสทาวกฺขิตฺเตหิ ธมฺมิเกหิ ธมฺมลทฺเธหิ ปริภุญฺชติ ปุญฺญานิ จ กโรติฯ โส ‘อุฏฺฐานวีริยาธิคเตหิ โภเคหิ พาหาพลปริจิเตหิ เสทาวกฺขิตฺเตหิ ธมฺมิเกหิ ธมฺมลทฺเธหิ ปริภุญฺชามิ ปุญฺญานิ จ กโรมี'ติ อธิคจฺฉติ สุขํ, อธิคจฺฉติ โสมนสฺสํฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, คหปติ, โภคสุขํฯ
And what is the happiness of using wealth? It’s when a gentleman uses his legitimate wealth, and makes merit with it. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of using wealth’.
กตมญฺจ, คหปติ, อานณฺยสุขํ? อิธ, คหปติ, กุลปุตฺโต น กสฺสจิ กิญฺจิ ธาเรติ อปฺปํ วา พหุํ วาฯ โส ‘น กสฺสจิ กิญฺจิ ธาเรมิ อปฺปํ วา พหุํ วา'ติ อธิคจฺฉติ สุขํ, อธิคจฺฉติ โสมนสฺสํฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, คหปติ, อานณฺยสุขํฯ
And what is the happiness of debtlessness? It’s when a gentleman owes no debt, large or small, to anyone. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of debtlessness’.
กตมญฺจ, คหปติ, อนวชฺชสุขํ? อิธ, คหปติ, อริยสาวโก อนวชฺเชน กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ, อนวชฺเชน วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ, อนวชฺเชน มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต โหติฯ โส ‘อนวชฺเชนมฺหิ กายกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต, อนวชฺเชน วจีกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต, อนวชฺเชน มโนกมฺเมน สมนฺนาคโต'ติ อธิคจฺฉติ สุขํ, อธิคจฺฉติ โสมนสฺสํฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, คหปติ, อนวชฺชสุขํฯ
And what is the happiness of blamelessness? It’s when a noble disciple has blameless conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of blamelessness’.
อิมานิ โข, คหปติ, จตฺตาริ สุขานิ อธิคมนียานิ คิหินา กามโภคินา กาเลน กาลํ สมเยน สมยํ อุปาทายาติฯ
These four kinds of happiness can be earned by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, depending on time and occasion.
อานณฺยสุขํ ญตฺวาน, อโถ อตฺถิสุขํ ปรํ; ภุญฺชํ โภคสุขํ มจฺโจ, ตโต ปญฺญา วิปสฺสติฯ
Knowing the happiness of debtlessness, and the extra happiness of possession, a mortal enjoying the happiness of using wealth, then sees clearly with wisdom.
วิปสฺสมาโน ชานาติ, อุโภ โภเค สุเมธโส; อนวชฺชสุขเสฺสตํ, กลํ นาคฺฆติ โสฬสินฺ”ติฯ
Seeing clearly, a clever person knows both kinds of happiness: the other kind is not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness of blamelessness.”
