เอกํ สมยํ ภควา โกสมฺพิยํ วิหรติ โฆสิตาราเมฯ อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“โก นุ โข, ภนฺเต, เหตุ โก ปจฺจโย, เยน มาตุคาโม เนว สภายํ นิสีทติ, น กมฺมนฺตํ ปโยเชติ, น กมฺโพชํ คจฺฉตี”ติ?
“Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why females don’t attend council meetings, work for a living, or travel to Persia?”
“โกธโน, อานนฺท, มาตุคาโม; อิสฺสุกี, อานนฺท, มาตุคาโม; มจฺฉรี, อานนฺท, มาตุคาโม; ทุปฺปญฺโญ, อานนฺท, มาตุคาโม—อยํ โข, อานนฺท, เหตุ อยํ ปจฺจโย, เยน มาตุคาโม เนว สภายํ นิสีทติ, น กมฺมนฺตํ ปโยเชติ, น กมฺโพชํ คจฺฉตี”ติฯ
“Ānanda, females are irritable, jealous, stingy, and unintelligent. This is the cause, this is the reason why females don’t attend council meetings, work for a living, or travel to Persia.”
