Right View
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร? สมณมจโล, สมณปุณฺฑรีโก, สมณปทุโม, สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโลฯ
“Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four? The confirmed ascetic, the white lotus ascetic, the pink lotus ascetic, and the exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณมจโล โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิโก โหติ, สมฺมาสงฺกปฺโป โหติ, สมฺมาวาโจ โหติ, สมฺมากมฺมนฺโต โหติ, สมฺมาอาชีโว โหติ, สมฺมาวายาโม โหติ, สมฺมาสติ โหติ, สมฺมาสมาธิ โหติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณมจโล โหติฯ
And how is a person a confirmed ascetic? It’s when a bhikkhu has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. That’s how a person is a confirmed ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปุณฺฑรีโก โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิโก โหติ, สมฺมาสงฺกปฺโป โหติ, สมฺมาวาโจ โหติ, สมฺมากมฺมนฺโต โหติ, สมฺมาอาชีโว โหติ, สมฺมาวายาโม โหติ, สมฺมาสติ โหติ, สมฺมาสมาธิ โหติ, สมฺมาญาณี โหติ, สมฺมาวิมุตฺติ โหติ, โน จ โข อฏฺฐ วิโมกฺเข กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหรติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปุณฺฑรีโก โหติฯ
And how is a person a white lotus ascetic? It’s when they have right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right samādhi, right knowledge, and right freedom. But they don’t have direct meditative experience of the eight liberations. That’s how a person is a white lotus ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปทุโม โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิโก โหติ …เป… สมฺมาวิมุตฺติ โหติ, อฏฺฐ จ วิโมกฺเข กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหรติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมณปทุโม โหติฯ
And how is a person a pink lotus ascetic? It’s when they have right view … and right freedom. And they do have direct meditative experience of the eight liberations. That’s how a person is a pink lotus ascetic.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโล โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ยาจิโตว พหุลํ จีวรํ ปริภุญฺชติ, อปฺปํ อยาจิโต …เป… ยญฺหิ ตํ, ภิกฺขเว, สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺย สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโลติ, มเมว ตํ, ภิกฺขเว, สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺย สมเณสุ สมณสุขุมาโลติฯ
And how is a person an exquisite ascetic of ascetics? It’s when a bhikkhu usually uses only what they’ve been invited to accept … And if anyone should be rightly called an exquisite ascetic of ascetics, it’s me.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the four people found in the world.”
