အထ ခေါ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကော ဂဟပတိ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကံ ဂဟပတိံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ဂဟပတိ, ဓမ္မာ ဣဋ္ဌာ ကန္တာ မနာပါ ဒုလ္လဘာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော? ဘောဂါ မေ ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇန္တု သဟဓမ္မေနာတိ, အယံ ပဌမော ဓမ္မော ဣဋ္ဌော ကန္တော မနာပေါ ဒုလ္လဘော လောကသ္မိံ၊
“Householder, these four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable are hard to get in the world. What four? The first thing is the wish: ‘May wealth come to me by legitimate means!’
ဘောဂေ လဒ္ဓါ သဟဓမ္မေန ယသော မေ အာဂစ္ဆတု သဟ ဉာတီဟိ သဟ ဥပဇ္ဈာယေဟီတိ, အယံ ဒုတိယော ဓမ္မော ဣဋ္ဌော ကန္တော မနာပေါ ဒုလ္လဘော လောကသ္မိံ၊
The second thing, having got wealth by legitimate means, is the wish: ‘May fame come to me, together with my family and teachers.’
ဘောဂေ လဒ္ဓါ သဟဓမ္မေန ယသံ လဒ္ဓါ သဟ ဉာတီဟိ သဟ ဥပဇ္ဈာယေဟိ စိရံ ဇီဝါမိ ဒီဃမာယုံ ပါလေမီတိ, အယံ တတိယော ဓမ္မော ဣဋ္ဌော ကန္တော မနာပေါ ဒုလ္လဘော လောကသ္မိံ၊
The third thing, having got wealth and fame, is the wish: ‘May I live long, keeping alive for a long time!’
ဘောဂေ လဒ္ဓါ သဟဓမ္မေန ယသံ လဒ္ဓါ သဟ ဉာတီဟိ သဟ ဥပဇ္ဈာယေဟိ စိရံ ဇီဝိတွာ ဒီဃမာယုံ ပါလေတွာ ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇာမီတိ, အယံ စတုတ္ထော ဓမ္မော ဣဋ္ဌော ကန္တော မနာပေါ ဒုလ္လဘော လောကသ္မိံ၊ ဣမေ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, စတ္တာရော ဓမ္မာ ဣဋ္ဌာ ကန္တာ မနာပါ ဒုလ္လဘာ လောကသ္မိံ၊
The fourth thing, having got wealth, fame, and long life, is the wish: ‘When my body breaks up, after death, may I be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm!’ These are the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.
ဣမေသံ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, စတုန္နံ ဓမ္မာနံ ဣဋ္ဌာနံ ကန္တာနံ မနာပါနံ ဒုလ္လဘာနံ လောကသ္မိံ စတ္တာရော ဓမ္မာ ပဋိလာဘာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော? သဒ္ဓါသမ္ပဒါ, သီလသမ္ပဒါ, စာဂသမ္ပဒါ, ပညာသမ္ပဒါ၊
These next four things lead to the getting of those four things. What four? Accomplishment in faith, ethics, generosity, and wisdom.
ကတမာ စ, ဂဟပတိ, သဒ္ဓါသမ္ပဒါ? ဣဓ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော သဒ္ဓေါ ဟောတိ, သဒ္ဒဟတိ တထာဂတဿ ဗောဓိံ: ‘ဣတိပိ သော ဘဂဝါ အရဟံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဝိဇ္ဇာစရဏသမ္ပန္နော သုဂတော လောကဝိဒူ အနုတ္တရော ပုရိသဒမ္မသာရထိ, သတ္ထာ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝါ'တိ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဂဟပတိ, သဒ္ဓါသမ္ပဒါ၊
And what is accomplishment in faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called accomplishment in faith.
ကတမာ စ, ဂဟပတိ, သီလသမ္ပဒါ? ဣဓ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ပါဏာတိပါတာ ပဋိဝိရတော ဟောတိ …ပေ… သုရာမေရယမဇ္ဇပမာဒဋ္ဌာနာ ပဋိဝိရတော ဟောတိ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဂဟပတိ, သီလသမ္ပဒါ၊
And what is accomplishment in ethics? It’s when a noble disciple doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or take alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. This is called accomplishment in ethics.
ကတမာ စ, ဂဟပတိ, စာဂသမ္ပဒါ? ဣဓ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဝိဂတမလမစ္ဆေရေန စေတသာ အဂါရံ အဇ္ဈာဝသတိ မုတ္တစာဂေါ ပယတပါဏိ ဝေါသဂ္ဂရတော ယာစယောဂေါ ဒါနသံဝိဘာဂရတော၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဂဟပတိ, စာဂသမ္ပဒါ၊
And what is accomplishment in generosity? It’s when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share. This is called accomplishment in generosity.

And what is accomplishment in wisdom? When your heart is mastered by covetousness and immoral greed, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should. Your fame and happiness fall to dust. When your heart is mastered by ill will … dullness and drowsiness … restlessness and remorse … doubt, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should. Your fame and happiness fall to dust.
သ ခေါ သော, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော အဘိဇ္ဈာဝိသမလောဘော စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ အဘိဇ္ဈာဝိသမလောဘံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသံ ပဇဟတိ၊ ဗျာပါဒေါ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဗျာပါဒံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသံ ပဇဟတိ၊ ထိနမိဒ္ဓံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ထိနမိဒ္ဓံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသံ ပဇဟတိ၊ ဥဒ္ဓစ္စကုက္ကုစ္စံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဥဒ္ဓစ္စကုက္ကုစ္စံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသံ ပဇဟတိ၊ ဝိစိကိစ္ဆာ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဝိစိကိစ္ဆံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသံ ပဇဟတိ၊
Knowing that ‘covetousness and immoral greed are corruptions of the mind’, that noble disciple gives them up. Knowing that ‘ill will …’ … ‘dullness and drowsiness …’ … ‘restlessness and remorse …’ … ‘doubt is a corruption of the mind’, that noble disciple gives it up.
ယတော စ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကဿ အဘိဇ္ဈာဝိသမလောဘော စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ အဘိဇ္ဈာဝိသမလောဘော စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသော ပဟီနော ဟောတိ၊ ဗျာပါဒေါ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဗျာပါဒေါ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသော ပဟီနော ဟောတိ၊ ထိနမိဒ္ဓံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ထိနမိဒ္ဓံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသော ပဟီနော ဟောတိ၊ ဥဒ္ဓစ္စကုက္ကုစ္စံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဥဒ္ဓစ္စကုက္ကုစ္စံ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသော ပဟီနော ဟောတိ၊ ဝိစိကိစ္ဆာ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသောတိ, ဣတိ ဝိဒိတွာ ဝိစိကိစ္ဆာ စိတ္တဿ ဥပက္ကိလေသော ပဟီနော ဟောတိ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော မဟာပညော ပုထုပညော အာပါတဒသော ပညာသမ္ပန္နော၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဂဟပတိ, ပညာသမ္ပဒါ၊ ဣမေသံ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, စတုန္နံ ဓမ္မာနံ ဣဋ္ဌာနံ ကန္တာနံ မနာပါနံ ဒုလ္လဘာနံ လောကသ္မိံ ဣမေ စတ္တာရော ဓမ္မာ ပဋိလာဘာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊
When a noble disciple has given up these things, they’re called ‘a noble disciple of great wisdom, of widespread wisdom, who sees what matters, and is accomplished in wisdom’. This is called accomplishment in wisdom. These are the four things that lead to the getting of the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.
သ ခေါ သော, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ စတ္တာရိ ပတ္တကမ္မာနိ ကတ္တာ ဟောတိ၊ ကတမာနိ စတ္တာရိ?
There are four fitting deeds that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow. What four?
ဣဓ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ အတ္တာနံ သုခေတိ ပီဏေတိ သမ္မာ သုခံ ပရိဟရတိ၊ မာတာပိတရော သုခေတိ ပီဏေတိ သမ္မာ သုခံ ပရိဟရတိ၊ ပုတ္တဒါရဒါသကမ္မကရပေါရိသေ သုခေတိ ပီဏေတိ သမ္မာ သုခံ ပရိဟရတိ၊ မိတ္တာမစ္စေ သုခေတိ ပီဏေတိ သမ္မာ သုခံ ပရိဟရတိ၊ ဣဒမဿ ပဌမံ ဌာနဂတံ ဟောတိ ပတ္တဂတံ အာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တံ၊
To start with, with his legitimate wealth he makes himself happy and pleased, keeping himself properly happy. He makes his mother and father happy … He makes his children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff happy … He makes his friends and colleagues happy … This is his first expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
ပုန စပရံ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ ယာ တာ ဟောန္တိ အာပဒါ အဂ္ဂိတော ဝါ ဥဒကတော ဝါ ရာဇတော ဝါ စောရတော ဝါ အပ္ပိယတော ဝါ ဒါယာဒတော, တထာရူပါသု အာပဒါသု ပရိယောဓာယ သံဝတ္တတိ၊ သောတ္ထိံ အတ္တာနံ ကရောတိ၊ ဣဒမဿ ဒုတိယံ ဌာနဂတံ ဟောတိ ပတ္တဂတံ အာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တံ၊
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he defends himself against threats from such things as fire, flood, rulers, bandits, or unloved heirs. He keeps himself safe. This is his second expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
ပုန စပရံ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ ပဉ္စဗလိံ ကတ္တာ ဟောတိ—ဉာတိဗလိံ, အတိထိဗလိံ, ပုဗ္ဗပေတဗလိံ, ရာဇဗလိံ, ဒေဝတာဗလိံ၊ ဣဒမဿ တတိယံ ဌာနဂတံ ဟောတိ ပတ္တဂတံ အာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တံ၊
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes five spirit-offerings: to relatives, guests, ancestors, king, and deities. This is his third expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
ပုန စပရံ, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ ယေ တေ သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ မဒပ္ပမာဒါ ပဋိဝိရတာ ခန္တိသောရစ္စေ နိဝိဋ္ဌာ ဧကမတ္တာနံ ဒမေန္တိ, ဧကမတ္တာနံ သမေန္တိ, ဧကမတ္တာနံ ပရိနိဗ္ဗာပေန္တိ, တထာရူပေသု သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏေသု ဥဒ္ဓဂ္ဂိကံ ဒက္ခိဏံ ပတိဋ္ဌာပေတိ သောဝဂ္ဂိကံ သုခဝိပါကံ သဂ္ဂသံဝတ္တနိကံ၊ ဣဒမဿ စတုတ္ထံ ဌာနဂတံ ဟောတိ ပတ္တဂတံ အာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တံ၊
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he establishes an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins—those who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves—that’s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven. This is his fourth expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
သ ခေါ သော, ဂဟပတိ, အရိယသာဝကော ဥဋ္ဌာနဝီရိယာဓိဂတေဟိ ဘောဂေဟိ ဗာဟာဗလပရိစိတေဟိ သေဒါဝက္ခိတ္တေဟိ ဓမ္မိကေဟိ ဓမ္မလဒ္ဓေဟိ ဣမာနိ စတ္တာရိ ပတ္တကမ္မာနိ ကတ္တာ ဟောတိ၊
'These are the four fitting deeds that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow.
ယဿ ကဿစိ, ဂဟပတိ, အညတြ ဣမေဟိ စတူဟိ ပတ္တကမ္မေဟိ ဘောဂါ ပရိက္ခယံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဂဟပတိ, ဘောဂါ အဋ္ဌာနဂတာ အပတ္တဂတာ အနာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တာ၊ ယဿ ကဿစိ, ဂဟပတိ, ဣမေဟိ စတူဟိ ပတ္တကမ္မေဟိ ဘောဂါ ပရိက္ခယံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဂဟပတိ, ဘောဂါ ဌာနဂတာ ပတ္တဂတာ အာယတနသော ပရိဘုတ္တာတိ၊
Whatever wealth is spent on something other than these four fitting deeds is said to not be expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause. But whatever wealth is spent on these four fitting deeds is said to be expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
ဘုတ္တာ ဘောဂါ ဘတာ ဘစ္စာ, ဝိတိဏ္ဏာ အာပဒါသု မေ; ဥဒ္ဓဂ္ဂါ ဒက္ခိဏာ ဒိန္နာ, အထော ပဉ္စဗလီ ကတာ; ဥပဋ္ဌိတာ သီလဝန္တော, သညတာ ဗြဟ္မစာရယော၊
‘I’ve enjoyed my wealth,
supporting those who depend on me; I’ve overcome losses; I’ve given uplifting religious donations; and made the five spirit-offerings. I have served the ethical and disciplined spiritual practitioners.
ယဒတ္ထံ ဘောဂံ ဣစ္ဆေယျ, ပဏ္ဍိတော ဃရမာဝသံ; သော မေ အတ္ထော အနုပ္ပတ္တော, ကတံ အနနုတာပိယံ၊
I’ve achieved the purpose for which an astute lay person wishes to gain wealth. I don’t regret what I’ve done.’
ဧတံ အနုဿရံ မစ္စော, အရိယဓမ္မေ ဌိတော နရော; ဣဓေဝ နံ ပသံသန္တိ, ပေစ္စ သဂ္ဂေ ပမောဒတီ”တိ၊
A mortal person who recollects this stands firm in the teaching of the noble ones. They’re praised in this life, and they depart to rejoice in heaven.”
