1. With Citta
ပဌမဲသိဒတ္တသုတ္တ
Isidatta (1st)
ဧကံ သမယံ သမ္ဗဟုလာ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ မစ္ဆိကာသဏ္ဍေ ဝိဟရန္တိ အမ္ဗာဋကဝနေ၊
At one time several senior bhikkhus were staying near Macchikāsaṇḍa in the Wild Mango Grove.
အထ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ ယေန ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ထေရေ ဘိက္ခူ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ ထေရေ ဘိက္ခူ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “အဓိဝါသေန္တု မေ, ဘန္တေ, ထေရာ သွာတနာယ ဘတ္တန်”တိ၊
Then Citta the householder went up to them, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to them, “Honorable Seniors, please accept my offering of tomorrow’s meal.”
အဓိဝါသေသုံ ခေါ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ တုဏှီဘာဝေန၊ အထ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ ထေရာနံ ဘိက္ခူနံ အဓိဝါသနံ ဝိဒိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ထေရေ ဘိက္ခူ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ ပက္ကာမိ၊
They consented with silence. Knowing that the senior bhikkhus had consented, Citta got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled them, keeping them on his right, before leaving.
အထ ခေါ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ တဿာ ရတ္တိယာ အစ္စယေန ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ ယေန စိတ္တဿ ဂဟပတိဿ နိဝေသနံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိံသု; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ပညတ္တေ အာသနေ နိသီဒိံသု၊
Then when the night had passed, the senior bhikkhus robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, went to Citta’s home, and sat down on the seats spread out.
အထ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ ယေန ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ထေရေ ဘိက္ခူ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ အာယသ္မန္တံ ထေရံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “‘ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တန်'တိ, ဘန္တေ ထေရ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကိတ္တာဝတာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ”တိ?
Then Citta went up to them, bowed, sat down to one side, and asked the senior venerable, “Honorable Senior, they speak of ‘the diversity of elements’. In what way did the Buddha speak of the diversity of elements?”
ဧဝံ ဝုတ္တေ, အာယသ္မာ ထေရော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
When he said this, the venerable senior kept silent.
ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ အာယသ္မန္တံ ထေရံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “‘ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တန်'တိ, ဘန္တေ ထေရ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကိတ္တာဝတာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ”တိ? ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ထေရော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
For a second time …
တတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ အာယသ္မန္တံ ထေရံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “‘ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တန်'တိ, ဘန္တေ ထေရ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကိတ္တာဝတာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ”တိ?
And for a third time, Citta asked him, “Honorable Senior, they speak of ‘the diversity of elements’. In what way did the Buddha speak of the diversity of elements?”
တတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ထေရော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
And a second time and a third time the senior venerable kept silent.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန အာယသ္မာ ဣသိဒတ္တော တသ္မိံ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃေ သဗ္ဗနဝကော ဟောတိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ဣသိဒတ္တော အာယသ္မန္တံ ထေရံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “ဗျာကရောမဟံ, ဘန္တေ ထေရ, စိတ္တဿ ဂဟပတိနော ဧတံ ပဉှန်”တိ?
Now at that time Venerable Isidatta was the most junior bhikkhu in that Saṅgha. He said to the senior venerable, “Honorable Senior, may I answer Citta’s question?”
“ဗျာကရောဟိ တွံ, အာဝုသော ဣသိဒတ္တ, စိတ္တဿ ဂဟပတိနော ဧတံ ပဉှန်”တိ၊
“Answer it, Friend Isidatta.”
“ဧဝဉှိ တွံ, ဂဟပတိ, ပုစ္ဆသိ: ‘ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တန္တိ, ဘန္တေ ထေရ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကိတ္တာဝတာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ, ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ'”တိ?
“Householder, is this your question: ‘They speak of “the diversity of elements”. In what way did the Buddha speak of the diversity of elements?’”
“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”၊
“Yes, sir.”
“ဣဒံ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ—
“This is the diversity of elements spoken of by the Buddha.
စက္ခုဓာတု, ရူပဓာတု, စက္ခုဝိညာဏဓာတု …ပေ…
The eye element, the sights element, the eye consciousness element …
မနောဓာတု, ဓမ္မဓာတု, မနောဝိညာဏဓာတု၊
The mind element, the thought element, the mind consciousness element.
ဧတ္တာဝတာ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, ဓာတုနာနတ္တံ ဝုတ္တံ ဘဂဝတာ”တိ၊
This is how the Buddha spoke of the diversity of elements.”
အထ ခေါ စိတ္တော ဂဟပတိ အာယသ္မတော ဣသိဒတ္တဿ ဘာသိတံ အဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အနုမောဒိတွာ ထေရေ ဘိက္ခူ ပဏီတေန ခါဒနီယေန ဘောဇနီယေန သဟတ္ထာ သန္တပ္ပေသိ သမ္ပဝါရေသိ၊ အထ ခေါ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ ဘုတ္တာဝိနော ဩနီတပတ္တပါဏိနော ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကမိံသု၊
Then Citta, having approved and agreed with what Isidatta said, served and satisfied the senior bhikkhus with his own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods. When the senior bhikkhus had eaten and washed their hands and bowls, they got up from their seats and left.
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ထေရော အာယသ္မန္တံ ဣသိဒတ္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “သာဓု ခေါ တံ, အာဝုသော ဣသိဒတ္တ, ဧသော ပဉှော ပဋိဘာသိ, နေသော ပဉှော မံ ပဋိဘာသိ၊ တေနဟာဝုသော ဣသိဒတ္တ, ယဒါ အညထာပိ ဧဝရူပေါ ပဉှော အာဂစ္ဆေယျ, တညေဝေတ္ထ ပဋိဘာသေယျာ”တိ၊
Then the senior venerable said to Venerable Isidatta, “Isidatta, it’s good that you felt inspired to answer that question, because I didn’t. So when a similar question comes up, you should also answer it as you feel inspired.”
