The Great Dreams
“တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော ပဉ္စ မဟာသုပိနာ ပါတုရဟေသုံ၊ ကတမေ ပဉ္စ?
“Bhikkhus, before his awakening five great dreams appeared to the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, when he was still not awake but intent on awakening. What five?
တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ မဟာပထဝီ မဟာသယနံ အဟောသိ, ဟိမဝါ ပဗ္ဗတရာဇာ ဗိဗ္ဗောဟနံ အဟောသိ, ပုရတ္ထိမေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဝါမော ဟတ္ထော ဩဟိတော အဟောသိ, ပစ္ဆိမေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဒက္ခိဏော ဟတ္ထော ဩဟိတော အဟောသိ, ဒက္ခိဏေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဥဘော ပါဒါ ဩဟိတာ အဟေသုံ၊ တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ ပဌမော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
This great earth was his bed. Himalaya, king of mountains, was his pillow. His left hand was laid down in the eastern sea. His right hand was laid down in the western sea. And both his feet were laid down in the southern sea. This is the first great dream that appeared to the Realized One before his awakening.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော တိရိယာ နာမ တိဏဇာတိ နာဘိယာ ဥဂ္ဂန္တွာ နဘံ အာဟစ္စ ဌိတာ အဟောသိ၊ တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ ဒုတိယော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
Next, a kind of grass called ‘the crosser’ grew up from his navel and stood pressing against the cloudy sky. This is the second great dream that appeared to the Realized One before his awakening.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော သေတာ ကိမီ ကဏှသီသာ ပါဒေဟိ ဥဿက္ကိတွာ (…) ယာဝ ဇာဏုမဏ္ဍလာ ပဋိစ္ဆာဒေသုံ၊ တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ တတိယော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
Next, white caterpillars with black heads crawled up from his feet and covered his knees. This is the third great dream that appeared to the Realized One before his awakening.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော စတ္တာရော သကုဏာ နာနာဝဏ္ဏာ စတူဟိ ဒိသာဟိ အာဂန္တွာ ပါဒမူလေ နိပတိတွာ သဗ္ဗသေတာ သမ္ပဇ္ဇိံသု၊ တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ စတုတ္ထော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
Next, four birds of different colors came from the four quarters. They fell at his feet, turning pure white. This is the fourth great dream that appeared to the Realized One before his awakening.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတော အရဟံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဗောဓိသတ္တောဝ သမာနော မဟတော မီဠှပဗ္ဗတဿ ဥပရူပရိ စင်္ကမတိ အလိပ္ပမာနော မီဠှေန၊ တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ ပဉ္စမော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
Next, he walked back and forth on top of a huge mountain of filth while remaining unsoiled. This is the fifth great dream that appeared to the Realized One before his awakening.
ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော အယံ မဟာပထဝီ မဟာသယနံ အဟောသိ, ဟိမဝါ ပဗ္ဗတရာဇာ ဗိဗ္ဗောဟနံ အဟောသိ, ပုရတ္ထိမေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဝါမော ဟတ္ထော ဩဟိတော အဟောသိ, ပစ္ဆိမေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဒက္ခိဏော ဟတ္ထော ဩဟိတော အဟောသိ, ဒက္ခိဏေ သမုဒ္ဒေ ဥဘော ပါဒါ ဩဟိတာ အဟေသုံ; တထာဂတေန, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတာ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေန အနုတ္တရာ သမ္မာသမ္ဗောဓိ အဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓါ၊ တဿာ အဘိသမ္ဗောဓာယ အယံ ပဌမော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
Now, as to when, before his awakening, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha was still not awake but intent on awakening. This great earth was his bed. Himalaya, king of mountains, was his pillow. His left hand was laid down in the eastern sea. His right hand was laid down in the western sea. And both his feet were laid down in the southern sea. This was fulfilled when the Buddha awakened to the perfect awakening. This was the first great dream that appeared to him while he was still not awakened.
ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော တိရိယာ နာမ တိဏဇာတိ နာဘိယာ ဥဂ္ဂန္တွာ နဘံ အာဟစ္စ ဌိတာ အဟောသိ; တထာဂတေန, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတာ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေန အရိယော အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကော မဂ္ဂေါ အဘိသမ္ဗုဇ္ဈိတွာ ယာဝ ဒေဝမနုဿေဟိ သုပ္ပကာသိတော၊ တဿ အဘိသမ္ဗောဓာယ အယံ ဒုတိယော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
As to when a kind of grass called ‘the crosser’ grew up from his navel and stood pressing against the cloudy sky. This was fulfilled when, after the Buddha had awakened to the noble eightfold path, it was well proclaimed wherever there are gods and humans. This was the second great dream that appeared to him while he was still not awakened.
ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော သေတာ ကိမီ ကဏှသီသာ ပါဒေဟိ ဥဿက္ကိတွာ ယာဝ ဇာဏုမဏ္ဍလာ ပဋိစ္ဆာဒေသုံ; ဗဟူ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဂိဟီ ဩဒါတဝသနာ တထာဂတံ ပါဏုပေတာ သရဏံ ဂတာ၊ တဿ အဘိသမ္ဗောဓာယ အယံ တတိယော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
As to when white caterpillars with black heads crawled up from his feet and covered his knees. This was fulfilled when many white-clothed laypeople went for refuge to him for life. This was the third great dream that appeared to him while he was still not awakened.
ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတဿ အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော စတ္တာရော သကုဏာ နာနာဝဏ္ဏာ စတူဟိ ဒိသာဟိ အာဂန္တွာ ပါဒမူလေ နိပတိတွာ သဗ္ဗသေတာ သမ္ပဇ္ဇိံသု; စတ္တာရောမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝဏ္ဏာ ခတ္တိယာ ဗြာဟ္မဏာ ဝေဿာ သုဒ္ဒါ တေ တထာဂတပ္ပဝေဒိတေ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဂါရသ္မာ အနဂါရိယံ ပဗ္ဗဇိတွာ အနုတ္တရံ ဝိမုတ္တိံ သစ္ဆိကရောန္တိ၊ တဿ အဘိသမ္ဗောဓာယ အယံ စတုတ္ထော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
As to when four birds of different colors came from the four quarters. They fell at his feet, turning pure white. This was fulfilled when members of the four castes—khattiya, brahmins, peasants, and menials—went forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One and realized supreme freedom. This was the fourth great dream that appeared to him while he was still not awakened.
ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတော အရဟံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဗောဓိသတ္တောဝ သမာနော မဟတော မီဠှပဗ္ဗတဿ ဥပရူပရိ စင်္ကမတိ အလိပ္ပမာနော မီဠှေန; လာဘီ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တထာဂတော စီဝရပိဏ္ဍပါတသေနာသနဂိလာနပ္ပစ္စယဘေသဇ္ဇပရိက္ခာရာနံ, တံ တထာဂတော အဂထိတော အမုစ္ဆိတော အနဇ္ဈောသန္နော အာဒီနဝဒဿာဝီ နိဿရဏပညော ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ၊ တဿ အဘိသမ္ဗောဓာယ အယံ ပဉ္စမော မဟာသုပိနော ပါတုရဟောသိ၊
As to when he walked back and forth on top of a huge mountain of filth while remaining unsoiled. This was fulfilled when the Realized One received robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. And he used them untied, uninfatuated, unattached, seeing the drawbacks, and understanding the escape. This was the fifth great dream that appeared to him while he was still not awakened.
တထာဂတဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရဟတော သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓဿ ဗောဓိသတ္တဿေဝ သတော ဣမေ ပဉ္စ မဟာသုပိနာ ပါတုရဟေသုန်”တိ၊
Before his awakening these five great dreams appeared to the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, when he was still not awake but intent on awakening.”
