Mahākoṭṭhita said to Sāriputta:
“‘အဝိဇ္ဇာ, အဝိဇ္ဇာ'တိ, အာဝုသော သာရိပုတ္တ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကတမာ နု ခေါ, အာဝုသော, အဝိဇ္ဇာ; ကိတ္တာဝတာ စ အဝိဇ္ဇာဂတော ဟောတီ”တိ?
“Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘ignorance’. What is ignorance? And how is an ignorant person defined?”
“ဣဓာဝုသော အဿုတဝါ ပုထုဇ္ဇနော သမုဒယဓမ္မံ ရူပံ ‘သမုဒယဓမ္မံ ရူပန်'တိ ယထာဘူတံ နပ္ပဇာနာတိ; ဝယဓမ္မံ ရူပံ …ပေ… ‘သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မံ ရူပန်'တိ ယထာဘူတံ နပ္ပဇာနာတိ၊
“Friend, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand form, which is liable to originate … liable to vanish … liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish.
သမုဒယဓမ္မံ ဝေဒနံ …ပေ… ဝယဓမ္မံ ဝေဒနံ …ပေ… ‘သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မာ ဝေဒနာ'တိ ယထာဘူတံ နပ္ပဇာနာတိ၊ သမုဒယဓမ္မံ သညံ …ပေ… သမုဒယဓမ္မေ သင်္ခါရေ …ပေ… ဝယဓမ္မေ သင်္ခါရေ …ပေ… သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မေ သင်္ခါရေ ‘သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မာ သင်္ခါရာ'တိ ယထာဘူတံ နပ္ပဇာနာတိ၊ သမုဒယဓမ္မံ ဝိညာဏံ …ပေ… သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မံ ဝိညာဏံ ‘သမုဒယဝယဓမ္မံ ဝိညာဏန်'တိ ယထာဘူတံ နပ္ပဇာနာတိ၊
They don’t truly understand feeling … perception … functioning patterns … consciousness, which is liable to originate … liable to vanish … liable to originate and vanish, as consciousness which is liable to originate and vanish.
အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, အာဝုသော, အဝိဇ္ဇာ; ဧတ္တာဝတာ စ အဝိဇ္ဇာဂတော ဟောတီ”တိ၊
This is called ignorance. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.”
