Demons
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four?
อสุโร อสุรปริวาโร,
A demon surrounded by demons,
อสุโร เทวปริวาโร,
a demon surrounded by gods,
เทโว อสุรปริวาโร,
a god surrounded by demons, and
เทโว เทวปริวาโรฯ
a god surrounded by gods.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อสุโร โหติ อสุรปริวาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ทุสฺสีโล โหติ ปาปธมฺโม, ปริสาปิสฺส โหติ ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อสุโร โหติ อสุรปริวาโรฯ
And how is a person a demon surrounded by demons? It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, and their followers are the same. That’s how a person is a demon surrounded by demons.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อสุโร โหติ เทวปริวาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ทุสฺสีโล โหติ ปาปธมฺโม, ปริสา จ ขฺวสฺส โหติ สีลวตี กลฺยาณธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อสุโร โหติ เทวปริวาโรฯ
And how is a person a demon surrounded by gods? It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, but their followers are ethical, of good character. That’s how a person is a demon surrounded by gods.
