Vipers
“චත්තාරෝමේ, භික්ඛවේ, ආසීවිසා. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of viper. What four?
ආගතවිසෝ න ඝෝරවිසෝ,
One whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal,
ඝෝරවිසෝ න ආගතවිසෝ,
one whose venom is lethal but not fast-acting,
ආගතවිසෝ ච ඝෝරවිසෝ ච,
one whose venom is both fast-acting and lethal, and
නේවාගතවිසෝ න ඝෝරවිසෝ—
one whose venom is neither fast-acting nor lethal.
ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ ආසීවිසා. ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ ආසීවිසූපමා පුග්ගලා සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මිං. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ?
These are the four kinds of viper. In the same way, these four people similar to vipers are found in the world. What four?
ආගතවිසෝ න ඝෝරවිසෝ,
One whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal,
ඝෝරවිසෝ න ආගතවිසෝ,
one whose venom is lethal but not fast-acting,
ආගතවිසෝ ච ඝෝරවිසෝ ච,
one whose venom is both fast-acting and lethal, and
නේවාගතවිසෝ න ඝෝරවිසෝ.
one whose venom is neither fast-acting nor lethal.
කථඤ්ච, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ ආගතවිසෝ හෝති, න ඝෝරවිසෝ? ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒකච්චෝ පුග්ගලෝ අභිණ්හං කුජ්ඣති. සෝ ච ඛ්වස්ස කෝධෝ න දීඝරත්තං අනුසේති. ඒවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ ආගතවිසෝ හෝති, න ඝෝරවිසෝ. සේය්යථාපි සෝ, භික්ඛවේ, ආසීවිසෝ ආගතවිසෝ, න ඝෝරවිසෝ; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
And how is a person’s venom fast-acting but not lethal? It’s when a person is often angry, but their anger doesn’t linger long. That’s how a person’s venom is fast-acting but not lethal. That person is like a viper whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal.
කථඤ්ච, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ ඝෝරවිසෝ හෝති, න ආගතවිසෝ? ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒකච්චෝ පුග්ගලෝ න හේව ඛෝ අභිණ්හං කුජ්ඣති. සෝ ච ඛ්වස්ස කෝධෝ දීඝරත්තං අනුසේති. ඒවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ ඝෝරවිසෝ හෝති, න ආගතවිසෝ. සේය්යථාපි සෝ, භික්ඛවේ, ආසීවිසෝ ඝෝරවිසෝ, න ආගතවිසෝ; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
And how is a person’s venom lethal but not fast-acting? It’s when a person is not often angry, but their anger lingers for a long time.

ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ ආසීවිසූපමා පුග්ගලා සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මින්”ති.
These four people similar to vipers are found in the world.”
